To read, or not to read?

Just a quick question from a newbie writer.

As a reader, what makes you interested in a story besides it's premise? And as a follow up, what are the factors that make you drop a particular series you've been reading? Just looking for some insights ??‍♂️

Well, I read a story when it has much content already. Even though I'm attracted by the premise, if I had to wait for uncertain days for an update, then I'd rather let it accumulate for a while.

Also, the sentence construction and grammar, plus the story-telling style. I'm a bit strict when it comes to these, so when a work's got a lot of these and the author has no plans of correcting them (even when I notifed them thru PM. I'm not a show-off to diss an author publicly thru comments, unless they want a review, and even there, I try to be polite when giving negative feedback), I'd eventually stop reading.

So you have a specific storytelling style that you look for in novels? And may I ask what kind it is?

Nope. I'm pretty liberal when it comes to storytelling styles.

I'm more on the technical side, like grammar, sentence-construction and spelling. I can also give a bit of feedback on the story-telling style, but I don't encourage being strict to one style because I think every author is unique.

I was asking this because I recently had a reader comment about how he was gonna drop my series because he didn't like where I was taking the story, so I just wanted to know whether everyone would have the same opinion abt, dropping a series. Thanks for the insight!

Ya know, while it's pretty painful to receive that kind of message, you should just continue about your work's direction. You're the author, and they're the readers. It is indeed important to know the feedback of your readers, but keep in mind that you could not please everyone. So long as you know what direction your story would take (and you could do this by planning ahead), you could just dismiss those kind of feedback.

After all, the only one who definitely knows the potential of your work, would be you. Now, if you try to please everyone, your identity as a writer would be lost to the vast sea of other aspirants chasing after a fleeting dream. Stand fast for your work, and do your best. I'm sure you'll get your right audience someday.

Trust me, I've been there as well. You could read those comments in my work.

Oh, and thanks for the follow.

To start reading, I mostly look at tags and genres. Aside from that, I try to get the general direction and tonality of the story from the synopsis. If it fits I put it on a reading list.

Due to my bad experiences, I also wait for a story to accumulate a certain amount of chapters before starting to read!

What makes me drop stories is when the story ceases to be fun. Or when I find a trope or cliche I hate.

I tend to drop a series when the story becomes too long and complicated for me to understand. Or repeating the same pattern over and over again.

Yeah thanks for the insight! If you can review my work I'd very much appreciate it! I'm kinda looking through the reviews I currently have and they all seem to be sugar coated shiz, I'd like a very strict review from a senpai author if it's not too much to ask. If you do decide to review it, sending it here on this thread or on the actual story is fine, whatever works best for you! Thanks in advance! ☺️

Ayt. I'm currently reading it now. It will take time to finish, but I'd give my review once I read all the uploaded chapters.

This is a great question!

For me, I normally binge read so if a premise is interesting then I'll keep it on my list until there are more than twenty chapters or so (because I hate cliffhangers). Unless the character is really annoying and weak and there is no character growth or the book is just about mindless smut with no storytelling to it, I will drop it. I love smut, just don't want to read about it ten chapters in a row XD

Another reason I'll drop the novel is if I don't like where the story is headed or I know it's going to be a sad ending and I've invested so much in the character, then I'll drop off at a good part and make that my ending, hahaha!

I tend to only read stories that are popular and have a lot of content. I will pretty much wait until a series has 40k+ words before giving it a try, then I binge read the whole thing.
