I am writing a scene were my protagonist is escaping from being kidnapped. She has her wrists tied by rope.

Because she has lots of experience with being kidnapped, I was just going to write her dislocating her thumbs and freeing herself through the pain.

But after researching online, it turns out the Hollywood favorite way of escaping from handcuffs and rope is unrealistic (no surprises there, I guess).

Do you think it doesn't really matter much and should stick with it? Or writing her escape differently is worth it for immersion?

Thanks in advance!

Focused on romance and action.

Crime fighting, corruption fighting type of action. And Academy life type of romance.
I don't think the readers will care about the realism. If you want to be fully realistic, just let her sit with her arms bound, it is highly impossible for a person to unbound themself without any help.

Honestly, causal readers won't care much about these kinds of details as long as you have a consistent internal logic to the story.

Yesterday... I watched a Chinese martial arts drama. The protagonist was robbed and bound hand and foot. His escape was unexpected: he let a bandit slash him with a machete, then he aimed his rope-tied ankles at the machete. He finally broke free.

Not a bad way though, if you're gonna go style over realism, why not just go full badass.

If it's action, you have two options: give the protagonist enough power to tear the rope apart. (very energetic and cinematic)

As for romance, nothing is better than a damsel in distress, bring the lover or knight to rescue her!
