And I mean "pure" pure, no overarching goals, just vibes.

I'd categorize them into:
  • Hyper-realistic ones with zero heavy drama
  • Ones with darker tone
  • Ones that mix supernatural stuff into daily life

Honestly, it's a tough genre to write. Authors don't need to stress over world-building or power systems, but since life is naturally more boring than exciting, making it worth following is a real challenge.

By 'pure', are you talking about something like "Daily lives of high-school boys" or "My ordinary life"?

Maybe the MC should be a first time parent trying to figure out how to raise child (could be theirs or someone else's)children with zero idea how. And what will really make it interesting would be that there are 3 children of different ages and the MC is the only one responsible for them

Wait... rereading my own post, I guess that came out more from an author's POV than a reader's. My bad.

From a pure reader's perspective, the Holy Trinity of a top-tier SoL for me is:
  • The world has to feel like a place I'd actually want to hang out in.
  • Characters I'd Genuinely Want to be Friends With.
  • The story takes a completely normal event and somehow makes it feel profound or nostalgic.

Yeah, basically.

Personally, as long as the dialogue is fun and I can tell who's who, I'll enjoy it. Doesn't' matter the genre or the plot or how deep the world is.

Watching people talk has always been a hobby of mine.:blob_melt: But yeah, most people would probably prefer a deeper world. I'll never forgive them turning hitman reborn into a serious show.

So something like Akebi's Sailor Uniform? I love that shiz. Like I wouldn't like a show based upon my own life because if my own life was interesting (or at least more interesting) I wouldn't be a writer (or I'd be a very different sort of writer). But life doesn't need magic or grand quests to make it interesting, it just needs something more than going to a boring building to learn things that didn't ultimately matter in the long run.

My story started as pure slice of life with supernatural mixed in, and the first six chapters live off of the characters and their dynamics... then I got to chapters 7 & 8 and before I knew it scope and overarching plan dramatically expanded 😅

So I ended up with something that has Slice of Life elements rather than a pure one.

Relatable, the urge for intense drama is always lurking. Luckily I caught myself and scrapped a huge chunk of my plot 💥

I think that "something" might be passion. Who'd actually want to read about a lazy dude with zero motivation and no desire to grow?
