Hey all, I'm Queerious, and I recently joined up to write - I was most recently writing on the SCP wiki, if any of y'all are familiar, and got a good sense of how authors interact, how the readers want things presented etc.

Since I'm fresh to here, do any of y'all have any general tips for a new author to the site, who has a lot of writing experience beforehand?

:blob_hide: @WelcomeToSH,
I read those resources, but I also wanted to get the perspective of other authors as things currently sit, you know?

So I did a ton in the past two years, placed third in the most recent big contest and – funnily enough – wrote a spiritual successor to the toaster,
SCP-8426!

I have just over 100 works on the SCP Wiki, so there's a lot to pick from haha
Dang that's a lot. I remember playing a SCP game with my brother and we both had heart attacks and put down the game. Are you planning on writing SCP related content here?

Damn, that's crazy. ive always been interested in the SCP Foundation, but I'm more into the MTF parts of it. MTF alpha 9 will always be my favorite.

No, I'm done with SCP for now, and would probably go back if I wanted to write more for it?

I'm doing something original this time

Hmm. A few general things ive learned:
-1500-3000 words is a good ballpark for chapters
-make sure your formatting is good for mobile, less wall of texts
-this site is spicier than say royal road, which is pretty strict. But not as spicy as the smut site. Kinda inbetween
-Litrpg is popular! Harem. Genderswap as well
-There is not a shoutout swap or review swap culture here like on royal road
-when you first start you might get some bot or scam comments. Watch out for those

Thankfully, I'm used to writing for digital media, so mobile is always something I keep in mind haha

Good to know about the rest of the details, I came from a space that prioritized review swapping, so that's a good one to know!

Your name seems really familiar... oh, you're from SCP! I've read way too much of that in the past, some of your stuff included.

I'm new here myself, but I've been reading for a while and I can at least say that paragraphs should be short enough to break up the text on a small mobile screen, and chapters that are too long risk tiring the reader since we can't bookmark in the middle of a chapter. I've also heard that including as many accurate genre/tags as you can maximizes discoverability.

If you're asking the general culture of peeps here, well...

Just do what you want as long as you abide by the T&Cs and rules of the site. AI use in covers and art is tolerated and accepted, while AI-generated content is frowned upon (or dissed, whoever saw it).

You can also ask for feedback, though only a few peeps have the confidence or the time to do it. And be careful of scammers who would give you unsolicited "commish me" messages.

Totally fair, I don't use AI for anything myself, so that's not an issue

Feedback and etc aren't a big thing for me, I'm mostly happy to write and do my own thing, thanks for replying!
