Hi! Just wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience.

The short story is I almost got scammed into purchasing cover art from someone who contacted me on this site.

The full story sequentially and how I figured it out:
- The user TaleTreaderr79 who has now deleted their account on scribblehub, messaged me about liking my stories and asked to talk on discord with handle teresa_butler160
- When I talked to them and asked them what they liked, their answers always sidestepped my question and had no specifics, reading a lot like chatgpt responses in their language
- We started talking about pricing and they sent me an invoice on paypal, where they had a completely different name: Fazean Shoaib @FazeanShoaib
- This made me suspicious, so I messaged them on instagram to make sure it was actually the artist and not just one they made up for discord, they haven't messaged me back, but I am now suspicious of even their art work after this next part
- They have about 3 different styles of art on their page, with one style artistically being a lot better, and that being in the middle, rather than the most recent, which would be expected for artist growth
- I reverse image searched their best image and found that this piece of artwork was not made by this person. I haven't found the original image. Which together could be a mistake by google, except for this next part
- Looking at the captions on the art piece, the text for it reads very computer generated, and most importantly, this art is from a specific fandom and names the wrong character

So, overall, watch out for these names, and look out for this scam in general. Having such a cohesive and well established profile doesn't mean its not a scam.

One of my scammers was slightly more advanced; they mentioned even the part that they liked about my story in the comments. Still, I never went to their Discord.

Why? Because I have severe trust issues. They got captivated in only a few chapters? I call bullshit.

This is what everyone should make suspicious. Anyone who has “different artstyles” that have varying technical skill are either stolen or AI generated.

We even had a scammer here who had the balls to plead with me after I called them out. “Just a to make money” with scam

that is advanced, can't say I've heard that before.
The comment even went in a chain instead of a single comment.

Most scammers will be like: I got captivated, your story needs more recognition, let me share some tips with you/let me help you improve, on my discord (Cue Discord link)

That scammer : (Cue the best scene from my second chapter) This scene was so beautiful, I could almost imagine it. Where did you get the inspiration to write this?

Me (Replying to the comment) : Thanks. I got the inspiration from (Yada yada yada)

That scammer (Replying to my reply on their comment) : I really want to make your scene come to life through beautiful illustrations, let's talk further on my Discord (Cue Discord link)

This was when my trust issues kicked in. I examined that account and it was very recently created. More than that, that individual had made the exact kind of comment on several stories, the pattern was exactly the same. Praise a part from the story, the author replies with whatever, then the exact same reply.

Some scammers actually put some “effort” into scamming people and use copy and paste instead of a bot.

I left them on read after I figured it out - didn't want them to correct the red flags and be more convincing for someone else instead

Yep, lot of scammers. GJ not falling for it.

Worsened by AI now.

Anecdote (not me), i once saw a game dev said they likely were scammed when they commissioned a cover for their game. So they asked somewhere with lot of people, if its AI.

People were like 70-90% sure it was because of the style (despite not usual AI styles and being chibi with a flaming city rooftops background, it was still very similar).
Some of them pointing out one that one spire, strangely fused with another roof/gate top corner but unsure.

Most artists won't approach you even if they like your work, unless you're looking for an artist yourself. So if they approached you even without you looking, that's a reason for suspicion.

Why? Artists are often introverts who would want to be needed, rather than force someone to need them.
