Do they give expensive gifts cause they truly genuinely love you or is it to negate their guilt for not spending enough time or attention to me? Money can indeed buy you happiness but it's a very short span of happiness after which there is a blank hollow.

What use is all the money and expensive gifts in the world if all you wanted was some time and affection together? Money can never equate love, not at the same level.

The answer may still be unclear...
First - why did they leave you ? - They could manage having you little bro with them..then why not you the elder daughter?
second - If they say - for your own good...is it good for someone to leave their kid at age three? at their grandparents house?
third - They don't understand how absence of parents might affect their kids.
fourth - The people giving you gifts might be just not caring much about you but only their respect. (them thinking giving you expensive gifts might make you happy and make you think that they still you (also make you think...They are actual good guys all trustable and good people) but they might not actually be so.

It is all up to you to pick up on the hints of how they actually are...real good or fake good

If we're speaking STRICTLY on gifts, then I don't really care about gifts, honestly. I'd rather spend time with the people I care about than receive any gift from them. If we're talking about overall, then money can DEFINITELY buy permanent happiness, at least for me. The only source of stress in my life is money and bills. If I received a tax-free injection of $10M USD right now, I would be free from any stress forever and achieve nirvana.

I know right. I always wondered why I had to be the one living apart.
And then they convinced me that it was entirely my idea to live apart. Like a 3yr old would have the capability to decide that.

I used to only see them twice a year and each time they used to buy me expensive gifts and wardrobes and take me out that it felt like a fever dream and that they did love me but now that I think about it, it's probably to lessen their guilt for me. It's just I can't stand them worrying about me and asking me to care about them too when we are obviously strangers to each other.

Grudges are momentary. Regret is eternal. It's not too late to reconnect, even if you feel that they've wronged you. They clearly care in some capacity if they bothered to spend that kind of money on you. I don't pretend to know your situation, but if wasting four years and taking on a fat ass student loan debt studying psychology taught me anything, it's that there's nothing wrong with hearing someone out (usually).

They were happy to keep me. The reason I grew up so spoiled is cause of my grandparents. I believe they love me and I never lacked for anything under their care. Sometimes they'd urge my parents to come visit me on festivals or birthdays but none other than that. They thought it'd be easier on my parents cause taking care of two kids while they are working and on trips is difficult.

I buy expensive gifts when I have the money coz that's one way of how I show my love for my loved ones. But that's me, I don't know about others.

Besides, I don't think too much about that. If I was given something, I'll just accept it. Sometimes, the truth hurts, and we're not ready to accept it.

Depends. How you feel getting it.

70% of the time act of unprompted gift giving IMO is for the giver.

very short span of happiness can become long stack if you tetris it properly:blob_teehee:

Seriously tho,
Most of life in my opinion is not being happy, but just comfortable... is good I think.

In my opinion, more often than not gift and guilt are unrelated; gifts are a convenient form of expression available to all people with sufficient funds but bad at expressing themselves.
