What's your opinion on giving constructive feedback for folks who do generate AI slop?

Well, the question was asking for your opinion and I got it, but what about the constructive part? Any ideas on making an improvement upon the flood? There's no damming it, but can we guide the flow somewhere to flourish and produce itself into something palatable?

Constructive, non blinded by hate SouthernMaiden:

General editing, and as a beta reader is okay in my book. Just don't use it to replace what you've written.

For example, it might say. "This could be stronger" or "this sentence needs more impact" or "this dialogue comes across bland". Stuff of that nature, or even more detailed. Then you take that and make the changes using your own brain (instead of asking it to rewrite for you). That way you maintain your own voice while developing your own skills.

It could also help you brainstorm, or be a sounding board. But again, have to be careful not to ask it to give you ideas. Always a tool not a replacement.

I also think if AI could truly understand your style it might be able to give better (less generic) feedback.

As for myself, I use notebooklm to keep track of details in past chapters. You can upload your own material and it sort of acts like a localized AI trained on only what you give it. Like a search engine for my own work.

And avoid the "ai tone" at all costs. If I notice it and the "writer" did not disclose that they used AI, I'll assume it was just generated wholesale.

I know, it is like missing the nail and striking our thumb with the head of a hammer; we'll throw down that hammer so hard it bounces back and gives us a goose egg right on the temple... speaking from experience.

I think it is that readily available dependency of validation that drives people to misuse AI or even responsibly use it but just too much. Or how about when you receive a term that is specific for an object or name, but the translator completely thinks it is something far more common like what @Hellgreen was talking about? Yeah, AI can really be bad at catching onto the context or intent of the not-a-mistake phrase.

I heard that's why we have servers, leaders, and specialists—at the end of the day, we don't want to do that stuff. So that's just the way we people are. But to answer your question: constructive criticism only matters if the person asks for it. But let's be honest, there's always going to be that group of people who's gonna ruin it. Like they say in the Boondocks television show, there are people who just like ruining shit! That's in the species. So those who don't use it, and those who use it as a tool, need to be aware there are always people who always want to game the system, no matter what it is. That's just the way we human beings is. Not trying to be too cynical here, but I'm open to other opinions.

You're not wrong. And I wish that this platform had more available and willing members with authority, holding accountable responsibility, that could regulate those sorts of people. Hell, I'm likely one of those sorts of people; I don't feel regret for how I spoke and called out that one fraud from last weekend. What I do feel is that the thread should've been locked down because it escalated into harassment; we were dogpiling on the fella even after admission of the violation. Even then, the account hasn't been looked into, the novel is still up, and we are dealing with someone who only had their feelings hurt. If that person had used AI with responsibility as a tool and not a surrogate for what was written, I might've felt less jumpy, but that person went beyond that with fake accounts, self-pat-on-the-backs with favorites, ratings, and even roleplayed in the comment sections within a handful of chapters. I don't tolerate frauds, yet they exist just as much as the spamming scammers and bots who ruin it for someone looking forward to a genuine comment on their novel; especially the new authors who are eager for their first comment conversation.

It sucks. How do we correct it? Considering the limitlessness of imagination, I don't believe that's possible. But efforts have to be made or else we're practicing Nihilism. I want to discover a method of constructive feedback where we gain people more willing to support and assist others when they weren't making their mistakes with AI maliciously. If we can, maybe those people could add to our numbers and we'd feel the overrun a little less.

It takes a lot of work to put together worthwhile feedback. Why put in all that effort if the author themselves won't put in the same amount to create the text to begin with?

At this point in time, you would have to be dense to not know that most readers do not want AI slop. They have been bashed on for a while now. So the best thing to do is stop reading. If the prompters don't get engagement, then there is no incentive for them to keep writing, is there? Most AI slop I have seen already had a Patreon page, buy me a coffee or whatever payment app they can use, ready to go on chapter one. They are just trying to make a quick buck off the AI slop.

There is no love or passion for the work, no care in trying to make a good story. Just hustle culture bleeding into yet another aspect of life as people try to get by.

Anyway, that's my opinion. I write smut with a story, so what do I know?

Even the most degenerate smut written by a human is better than AI slop tbh
