What’s a story concept that sounds broken on paper but works amazingly in execution?

I’ve noticed that some concepts look completely unbalanced or weird when you explain them in one paragraph — but when written properly, they turn out amazing.
For example:
1.Weak MC but broken ability
2.Slice-of-life mixed with serious stakes
3.A world where everyone follows one rule… except one person
On paper, these ideas sound risky.
But in execution, they can become memorable.
So I’m curious — what’s a concept you initially doubted, but later realized worked surprisingly well?
Books, web novels, anime, or even your own stories.
Would love to hear different perspectives.

1. I hate that trope.
2. I do that in my own slice of lifes.
3. Also don't like that.
As for the thread, my idea was a modern vampire in a world that became magical. Basically, a magic asteroid hit the Earth while she was holed up in a library. When that happened, only her dutiful maid stuck with her. All of the places like New York City became dungeons beneath the ground with magitech monsters. Of course, civilization had regressed. I think it would work well, but I don't really wanna write it right now.

Well, what about the LN, "The Eminence in Shadow"? It's just an isekai with a very chuni OP MC. But it's well executed... where every hallucination of the MC coincidentally fits the world's lore.

If we look at it purely from a literal aspect, such a plot seems forced and inorganic, but it is precisely because the author deliberately designed the MC as an extension of himself that this fiction became popular in its segment.

I myself was quite entertained and even laughed at the ridiculousness of the MC who played the role as a shadow hero and was misunderstood by people.

Well, readers don't really care whether the plot is organic or not, as long as the fiction entertains them then they will press the next button.

Don't ask about my fiction... it's intentionally very niche and probably won't be popular. I have already given a warning message about my fiction being heavy, traumatic and sensitive. So, this discussion is outside of my fiction writing.

My book is the second one. It came out quite well. The third - there is a fantastic movie on that premise - everyone on (an) Earth cannot lie. Only one man can and he takes complete advantage of it. Very quirky movie - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1058017/ (Then Invention of Lying)
