Question 1: What is the minimal chapter count that is most preferred or/and the maximum if there is any for a reader?

I notice that my chapters often have a word count of around 2000 - 3500, maybe more as I often write until I feel like it's a good time to end the chapter and I write multiple chapters in a single day, which allows me to add more words in case I have to revise it before posting it. (I post daily)
Does a chapter word count not matter as long as something is actually happening in the chapter (lore drops, immersive action, etc.)?

Some people on here will tell you that you should be 1000-1500 words.

Personally, I need 3500-4500 to achieve the depth I need to properly tell the story. My longest chapter is 6700, and that one needs the length

My word count depends solely on my mood, whether writing or reading.
But 1.5k to 2k is acceptable, anything beyond that is torture.

My first draft of a chapter will end up at around 2.8- 3k words. They usually gain 500 after the first edit and land in the mid 3k range.

That being said, I just write until I hit a stopping point for the chapter. I usually have a vague idea of what I want done in each chapter and go until then.

On online platforms it's generally preferred to have shorter chapters than in books people own. Because it's much harder to "bookmark" in the middle of a chapter.

Of course lots of people have different preferences, but I prefer to stay between 1.5k and 2.5k and sometimes I split something that narratively fits better as one chapter into two chapters so that it's easier for the readers. I have seen some people say they prefer chapters around 3k, but I think around 2k is good for most readers.

I've seen some people do it like: Chapter x Part 1 and Chapter x Part 2 on here, and I think that can work nicely as well.

The general agreement seems to be on 1.5k-2.5k as optimal length, but some readers can enjoy shorter, or much longer chapters. Personally I prefer around 4k, and I have seen some claim to prefer as short as 500 words, or upwards of 6-10k.

I most of the time have a length of 1900-2500 words per chapter. But I have chapters too that are around 3000-4000 words, it depends what is happening in the chapter.

I used to do daily single chapters at 2500 but realized I could break up my scenes and switched to shorter chapters averaging around 1500 - 2000 words but it varies wildly and sometimes if a scene only takes 600 words than so be it. When I do it this way I can get a few chapters out a day and I’m not just filling chapters up with fluff to hit my arbitrary old number.
When I did this the readers weren’t bothered at all. The readers will literally eat anything up as long as the content is formatted correctly and not bad grammar. Write whatever number you feel happiest with. Don’t get stuck on shit like word count. The only genuine concern is just getting your thoughts on paper as efficiently and effectively as possible.

You should really use the search feature to see if a topic has already been asked. This question has been asked at least 10 times this year...probably.

But you were anti search yesterday.

What you describe is on the large size for many stories that post regularly, though I certainly like that size.

The *general* recommendation is 1500-2000. Personally, I find 2000 to be a good minimum to set; by the time I reach it, I have the momentum to finish fleshing out the chapter until a nice end point. I found this harder at first, and easier as I got more experience. Now many chapters end up at 3k-ish, and the one I put up on Patreon the other day is just over 4k.

But my minimal goal is simply 2k. The rest flows naturally.

I once wrote a chapter with 20K words and it was called a masterpiece (hmph!).

I once wrote a chapter with 10K words. It was full of action and emotions, people loved it.

I think I have written numerous chapters with 8K words and that is for once a month updates.

I usually write 1K-3K here on SH since I update every two days.
But on other places? At least 3K.

Chapter length matters only so far as whether it delivers what the story needs it to.
Longer chapters have more room for depth, and to let the emotional beats breathe.
Pace yourself. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Most of my work here averages around 5500 - 6500 / chapter (with a monthly schedule to ensure proper quality control and account for my personal life offline.) and that's just my own personal take.
If you're aiming for rapid release, condensed chapters could work well.
If you want literary depth and weight, then lean towards the lengthier side.
But ultimately, do what realistically works for you. Not what others tell you to do.
