The goal changes as the relationship changes. It also depends on the culture. In my culture, once you have a toddler, the goal becomes to continue liking each other enough so that you don't have to split resources needed to raise the child. You need to agree on parenting strategies so you don't undermine each other's efforts. You also need to agree on a new bed frame because your toddler monkeyed around so much on the old one that he ripped it apart, and you can't just not have a bed frame because you need to hoard extra bedding and seasonal stuff under the bed, unless your home is actually big enough to keep that stuff elsewhere. Ultimately, you also want to raise the child to be a very capable individual with high EQ and IQ so they can earn enough money to provide for you in your old age.
