I believe that this site is full of creative people, therefore I stand with the statement that story covers should also be creative, not just some AI slop. Artist exists for a reason and if you can't afford one then edit the story cover yourself.
I’m going to explain why I not only feel this was written in ignorance of various situations, but also why I strongly disagree.
take my work example:
I searched for artists for almost a month on Reddit , various other forums, discords, and even via email. Each of the chapters will have art at the beginning, and I offered close to $200 per image if well done, because I wanted it to be received well.
Out of almost 30 inquiries only a few responded, and of those few one took the assignment and then ghosted me.
So you bet your sweet ass I 100% used A.I after that. And know what’s funny? The same day they saw I posted AI images, they wanted to flood my inbox about how it hurts artists etc. etc. And yet, through all the complaints, still not one took the job.
By this point you should see where I’m going… imho, some people (usually the repeat, and loudest posters about it) have no desire to create, only to advocate against ai usage.
That being said, my wife actually designed and created the cover of my book: and I ran it through an ai ‘smoother’ to remove choppiness as neither one of us are great with editing, which is why I approached artists to begin with. But that ship has sailed now.
When I get closer to self publishing through Kindle in February, I may attempt to reach artists again, then again, I may chose to forego it just as well.
I’ve made more progress with Ai art than I’ve gotten with human artists so far, so as Spike would say : whatever happens, happens. It is what it is.

Strange that all of the responses have vanished. Stares at moderators.

I will repeat my previous statement:
The administration team and those users that freely volunteer their time do not have nearly enough time to patrol or enforce this.

Enforce? Are AI images not allowed on the site? I feel like I read through the rules but don’t remember this ?

They are allowed, and even if that were to change the rule would be impossible to enforce.

Imagine that, a new member with a single post trying to stoke a debate about AI. Very predictable.

I can confidently say that I have probably spent more on artists than 95% of the people that try to start the whole AI-art witch hunting (I'm in the 10's of thousands across various projects). But I am not going to spend money on throw away cover art for one of my smut stories.

I stand by the statement that you can kiss my anus. I'm not paying hundreds of bucks for a small image that I can just generate damn near as good for free from an AI tool. I'm not one of those people who gets into the retarded "bleeding heart" causes.

That's for the "mostly peaceful" types who have the spare time to loot and riot due to a lack of employment, probably coupled with abundant food stamps and welfare checks. It's ALWAYS in the inner-cities after all. Technological progress has ALWAYS screwed people over in the end. Want a list of professions that are non-existent because of some such advance in technology? No? Didn't think so.

I don't care. I'm not sorry. AI Art for the win. The starving artist cliches is nauseatingly oversaturated at this point.

Learn to code, or whatever those dumbasses on Twitter (who've probably fled to that pathetic cesspit called BlueSky by now) said to the coal miners when their mines closed. I think it was West Virginia. It's been a few years now.

You do not understand that not all people can afford an artist and editing a cover ourselves needs a lot of resources, learning digital art, and time. Writers are supposed to write stories, and most writers cannot do digital art.

I paid someone $50 to draw a cover for one of my books and the SH bot rejected it. There was nothing wrong with it; nothing R-rated, even PG-13 rated, it just flat out rejected it. So, yeah, @Tony needs to really do something about the cover bot, because it's definitely broken and battered.

That artwork was a waste of my time and money.

Well, technology's advancements over the years have always taken people's jobs in various forms. Making this post shows how ignorant you are.

Many, many writers here write as a hobby; we're not as rich as you think everyone is to be able to afford hundreds of dollars on a picture that may end up mediocre or sub-par. Why waste money for something unreliable?

Every time I come across these "artists" who look for commissions— they almost always use AI art themselves.

I can do art myself, it's not very good but I'd rather sharpen my skills than commissioning an artist who might deliver something not what I had wanted.

I don’t support AI "artist" as an artist myself. But people in SH mostly write as a hobby. So telling these people (including me cz I'm not a digital artist so it's hard for me to make digital covers) to commission artist is kinda heartless.
I guess the former could be a little uhm, changed for non-artist. Maybe create a cover that doesn’t require much artistic skills? ("The Hobbit" has a pretty do-able cover for non-artist). So, while I don’t support AI, I guess this could be an option.

This is so true. While it's a bit much to expect people to commission artists, I find it equally entitled that every hobby writer wants to have (amazing) cover art despite not having the means. We all start small and even a meme as cover can do (and is way more interesting than another AI slop cover).

If we look at the asian hobby writer scene/look at NU, having customized art is also reserved for commercialized and seasoned authors. All the small writers use a standard cover or use memes (very often with cn novels).

Well, I didn't use an AI cover myself, but not everyone is an artist. If I didn't have an artist friend, and AI wasn't allowed, my cover would literally be a stick figure that looked like it was trying to go super Saiyan. I feel like this is just a rage bait thread.
