I faced major challenges for rigging hips and shoulders.
I tried difficult stuff like sculpting corrective shapekeys (handcrafted deformations). But I ran into some issues like this picture, where you see the combined shapekeys mess the hip joint.
Overall, I thought it was too time consuming and not scalable enough. For instance, corrective shapekeys won't necessarily give a good result for a different model with different topology.
So I switched to modeling a character with separate limbs like these pictures:
Rigging is so laborious. The visually best center of the joint doesn't always match real anatomy. They also seem to be different between a full body mesh and a separate limb mesh. So I had to find them with trial and error.
I recently managed to find a good spot for the shoulders. As for the tiddies, I'm working without them atm.
Because of the separate limbs, I thought that I should either use it for a wooden puppet character or an insectoid. I settled for this design, hoping that separations at the joint wouldn't look out of place:
