This is what I do most of the time-nyaNah~ I read tags first, then I skim description/synopsis, that's all I do.
I once thought engagement was a content issue. But that's not entirely accurate. Engagement is more about "market taste" (readers' preferences). No, I think in most cases the sample size isn't high enough. For example the ratings of my three stories are 5.0. 4.9 & 4.6. There's no qualitative difference with the 4.6 story - in fact its got the highest metrics of all 3. It's just that for whatever reason it attracted two randomers who awarded 1* and 2* ratings.
Number of readers is probably what I'd look for. Honestly most stuff on here is pretty consistent in quality - high level hobbyist, occasionally pushing into semi-professional - most of the time the ratings and other metrics are more about who was blessed by the algorithm, or else who created the best cover art.
For me the synopsis is more important. You're getting something that falls short of the technical quality of a published novel, in all likelihood, but in exchange you're getting a more interesting and original story concept. Sell me on that and I'll give it a go.
The absolute standouts do tend to blow up, I think - most writers outputting at professional quality will end up with hundreds of thousands of reads, so that's what I'd look out for on that front. And on occasion when someone that good doesn't blow up, they'll typically have a story with say 8k views and somehow still have 5 reviews with people writing that they can't believe something this good doesn't have more readers.
If your content is liked by the market, no matter how bad it is, engagement will be good. Conversely, no matter how good the content, if the market doesn't like it, it's likely to just sink into the algorithm. Therefore, it's more appropriate to search for hidden gems using tags or genres, rather than trending.
Wait – stories have ratings?A lot of stories with 5 stars are just novels that just got recently posted and are automatically given 5 stars by readers maybe the author themselves, but would you be more willing to check out a story with a high rating in the 4s?
In characterNo, just one star.
The difference between 4.8 and 5 is minor. My chances of reading it are the same.A lot of stories with 5 stars are just novels that just got recently posted and are automatically given 5 stars by readers maybe the author themselves, but would you be more willing to check out a story with a high rating in the 4s?
