This thread is not for you to share stuff you like or whatever. Since I am going away, might as well do things I wasn't able to do before. This is me sharing stuff I like among hundreds of crap I've read. Seriously, I think I forgot more works than some of you all read. I will list a couple titles I feel need more loving and eyes on them, in no particular order. P.S. In case you read this or that work, your opinions will be duly noted and ignored. Have fun.
1. From an old time when manga was better, wasn't as commercialized, Kurohime. You know the game Bayonetta? Yeah, a lot of people talk how it was inspired by this or that, but if you look at Kurohime you can guess where the true inspiration has come from. Since this manga is from 2000s it has this stunning manga art that hasn't been poisoned by MOE aesthetics yet. Compared to some modern works, it has a basic plot, yet the fact it is so basic is what makes it so great. Simple and to the point, isn't dragged out either. Go give it a try if you like badass fmc, straight romance, and action.
2. This is another oldie. When South Korea still hasn't destroyed the last bits of creativity and authors and artist could actually create, we got Veritas. What happens when you mix a bit of sci-fi technology, human emotions, and martial arts? You get Veritas, the best action manhwa set in modern Korea setting, the work that inspired another great manhwa The Breaker. Unfortunately we will never get season two while season two has an open end, but I say it is still worth it. I guess the worst part isn't even the fact we will get no season two, but the fact the artist behind this phenomenal work degraded over time. He is forced to draw in a shitty webtoon art, and we will probably never see the comeback of a person who made this.
3. Taking a break from oldies. I will actually put two works here, Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu and Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku since both are kind of the same genre, romance with some comedy sprinkled here and there. These two aren't groundbreaking works, they don't re-invent the genre. However, among atrocious romcoms, like Alya and other shit, that degrade faster than envy making and deleting new stories on an alt, these two stand out. There are actually a couple more, but they are far too short and still ongoing, so I don't know how they will turn out.
4. Another fairly recent one, manhua Heresy or Demons and Strangers. I honestly don't know what is the right title for that work, a couple sites use both. Anyway, Manhua means it is Chinese... And my god, this is how cultivation should be. Now, don't take me wrong here. I do not mean that cultivation should look dark, edgy, and spoopy.
It's just, compared to all the trash novels, compared to trashy adaptations, it felt like only this author(or studio) saw the potential behind the Cultivation. No cringey comedy because it pulls the largest demographic. No fucking transmigrators with an inside knowledge that make constant inside jokes for those who know. It's unfortunately has been axed. Life is unfair to great works, while some trash, like Solo Leveling, gets lucky, hidden gems remain hidden. Despite that, you should still give it a try. The plot wasn't able to really get goin, but in the short span it had, it has showcased so much more complexity to the cultivation world, you won't find it in any other work. And obviously it has gorgeous art.
5. I thought of what webtoon I can recommend. There are actually some good comedy ones like Transfer Student or Lookism, some action ones like Noblesse or Red Storm that have unique and interesting world, something 'deep and scary' like Bastard and American Ghost Jack, obviously some romcoms as well. Honestly, I don't think there is anything better to recommend here than adult webtoon. A lot of the SFW webtoons repeat themselves in one way or another. Editors and platforms stiffle the creativity out of authors and studios. NSFW works have a bit more freedom. So my rec for webtoons would be Queen Bee. Not much to say here other than it has actual plot, and a good one. Maybe it's a bit too dark and dramatic as in soap opera level of drama, but compared to 'adult' SFW webtoons it's a breath of fresh air. Characters actually feel alive, not like robots. When someone breaks down, you believe it's a human emotion because the consequences of the break down doesn't disappear next chapter, I'm looking at you, SSS Class suicide hunter.
6. I think this will be the last one, since I spent way too much time than I've initially thought. What can be a better way to end this other than mentioning Usogui? This manga blew my mind and made it into my top 10 like corty made it to trending before he flew too close to the sun and got 2k readers. It was so easy for this manga to get there, it's not even funny. The plot of this one is honestly on of the most crazy ones I've seen before. The way mangaka utilizes the manga format is crazy. It doesn't have shitty symbolism or pretends like it's more than it is. What it has is something I can't spoil to you. The biggest spoiler I can give, is you have to actually finish the manga to understand why it is so great.
It is super over the top. It's not quite sci-fi, but it's too far from being realistic either. So temper your expectations if you decide to give it a try. And as usual, art is goated. Usogui is one of those mangas where mangaka evolves as he draws it. You can see how it goes from something rough and goofy into a masterpiece level art.
There are many more works I can mention, Wolf Guy: Ookami no Monshou, Rainbow, Hideout, Change 123, Shamo, Otoyomegatari, Sakuranbo Syndrome, Natsume Arata no Kekkon, Marshmallow Ecchi, Wake Up Deadman, ReLIFE, The Children's Teacher, Mr. Kwon, Feng Shen Ji, Saotome Senshu, Hitakakusu, Bartender, The Wolf Won't Sleep. Honestly, I don't think any of this is worth the time I have to spend on recalling the titles. I doubt anyone would read anything of what I've mentioned. Considering I will visit SHF rarely, and the fact this thread will drown in a day, it was not worth it, for sure.
But I don't care. Without breaking the rules, I will do what I want to do before I go away.
