More specifically, is it the people on there? I feel like I've seen a shift in the kind of behavior from some people and it's really got my annoyed. Anyone have anything to add? I don't want to get too specific.

Like what do you mean? I haven't spent time there so don't know much.

Sadly, the ambiance on the RR forum has been parasitized by a small group of self-righteous, self-important narcissists who try to crush anyone who disagrees with them through harassment over the slightest pretext. It feels like being back in high school. It used to be a nice place where people would go to share tips and tricks, but now, not so much. To be fair, though, I met the same behaviour here, and I only posted here and maybe 3 other convos, so... not sure this is any better here. Truth is, there are bad people everywhere you go and good ones too.

The community there has more snobs than anywhere else.

Also, I got the most asinine reviews there, because they are not only snobbish, but also can't read, and it shows on their reviews.

Example:

IMG_9400.jpeg

It is in the synopsis. Including anything else people usually complain about (not enough magic, too much magic, not enough politics, too much politics)

But that comes with the fact that it has more users. And usually the ones who are loud are the complainers, those who enjoy a story at best leave a tftc comment and that's all.

If you can ignore those and not get hooked up on your rating that is trashed by those who 0.5-star it because they don't like XYZ, then it's fine. And you get more people willing to come to Patreon there than on SH.

I tried it but it's a lot harder to please people on Royal Road so I kind of stopped bothering

There are many good authors on the site. The problem is generally the moderation team, known for playing favorites. Piss off the wrong clique, and your story could get taken down even though you haven't broken any rules.

I avoid the (RR) forums
Honestly, for the best.

Not in particular. More susceptible to trends. So do not expect massive exposure there.

Royal Road's crowd is a lot more thorny and persnickety but they're also more vocal and much more likely to support a patreon. Before I was posting on there my patreon was at $350 a month or so. As soon as I started crossposting my work to RR it shot up to $2500.

RR sucks for readers who want something other than LitRPG and a particular style of writing. RR writing is better than SH, or at least it was, but it lacks any kind of individualism. Everything is minmaxed to suit tastes of particular group of people, if you are not a part of that group, welp, you basically has nothing to read there. On the other hand, if you are a big fan of LitRPGs RR is a treasure trove.

I've been around the site as a reader for a decade, and author for about a year (not under this penname).

I have some very disagreeable, things to say about the site in general, so I'll keep most of it to myself. Ever since the great nsfw deluge, every miniscule problem on site has turned up to eleven, but everyone can see that. This really isn't about who can show a booby or not, but that in of itself, is a symptom of the changing environment.

My main gripes are with how newer authors are treated within the space and how they get squeezed out or flattened by certain ingroups - these holier-than-thou cliques who treat the site like their personal playground and won't hesitate to view you as opposition if you don't play along.
Newer authors get zero exposure because the site is absolutely saturated with drivel, and if you aren't willing to prostrate yourself for shoutout swaps or very shameless self promotion, you're invisible. The only way to even try making it is chasing rising stars like a hungry stray dog becoming a slave to their system.

Here's the bigger problem. Rising stars are dominated by these clique groups. They have money for advertisements that regular authors could never afford because we have bills to pay. They coordinate releases of similar themed "products" - whether in pairs, trios, or whole damn teams and boost each other through review swaps, favorites, reads, and shoutouts while keeping the connections subtle. This makes it nearly impossible for newer authors to hit the only real source of exposure. The environment is also packed with people who will white knight these established authors.

Where's my evidence? I'd prefer not to get into specifics given the potential for retaliation in the webnovel space. I fear it will eventually turn into something in the vein of webnovel.

RR is like the obnoxious elitist friend in your group who obsesses over one specific thing and hates everything because it isn't that one specific thing.

But it got more reach.

Didn't admins address the clique problem? Another person here said(though it was long ago) it is now kind of under control. Did it resurface?

I post my story on RR too, but I have never interacted in the forums. A handful of people had read it and commented, but for the most part, I'm invisible.

The thing is, you have to interact in the forums, and I simply don't have the energy to interact with two sites at the same time. Also, my story's genre isn't the most popular, neither here nor there, but people here were more welcoming, so I stayed here.

There have been ongoing issues over the years. I think you might be specifically referring to things like the review swap mafias... smaller coordinated groups, or how C O T E H used to run rampant with swaps. When I say clique, I mean highly influential author discord groups. Curated thinktanks, etc... People with success who gatekeep their networks. Personally the topic is uncomfortable for me, I really should stop rambling.

Ooooh, I see. Thank you for sharing it with us. If it bothers you, or you are worried your novel might suffer because of it, you can edit your messages or delete them.

Lol, no, this alternate Penname exists for a reason, I've just seen some nasty things in that community, and well I'd rather not be a part of it.

Is this because you said white men can't get their books published anymore and a few people on those forums keep raking you over the coals for it

Cause lol. Rofl even. Legit had to make a burner account just to be able to laugh about it without my main getting caught in the drama of your severe copium addiction.
