I have been watching a Youtube channel called iWriterly lately. It's by a former literary agent and now self-published author who worked some time in the industry. She now advises aspiring authors through her Youtube channel on how to write better and write in a way you are more likely to be picked up by agents.
For those who are unaware, literary agents are the people who represent authors in order to get them picked up by publishers. If you want to have any chance of getting picked up by one of the big publishers, it's going to have to be through an agent. Those big publishing houses simply do not listen to authors, they only work through agents who act like something of a pre-screener for them.
Check her out if you aspire to be published. She doesn't only advise on traditional publishing, she also talks a lot about self publishing and the expenses involved as well as what you have to do in order to self-market.

One thing I would suggest starting with is her piece on Query letters, which is the proper first step when it comes to approaching agents.
