1) If the offer is too good to be true, don't accomodate them. Most likely, it's a scam.

2) Real/legit artists in this site won't approach you, they are advertising their services to interested people here (check the Creations section in forum). I know because I am one. Tis not because we are snobs; we're embarrassed to force people to hire us.

I did approach people before, but it's because they advertised their commission/request first.

3) These 'collab' peeps may also be legit (I mean, they are actually looking for someone to collab with, and not to bolt out once you gave money) but you might end up doing stuff for free and for arbitrary reasons known only to your collaborator. So tis best not to accept anything from them.

4) Last thing about people here; we're in one big sanatorium, so if someone approached you talking about "great opportunity" or "money making bullshit", take extra care because legit SHF citizens are a step away from crazy (good and bad kind), and not shrewd scammers out to milk your bank account.

I'm new to this site, and I've been writing for a month now, but the only people in my inbox or reaching me out seems to always talk about collaboration or commission, with somehow bot-ish lingo, maybe some actual reader can give me some truth? how to differentiate actual reader, bot, or scammers comment?
Block your inbox, I never had to deal with those problems. :blob_hide:

5) Watch out for people who butter you up praising your story before offering advertising or covers for you. It's a common scam.

6) Broken English is a red flag. So is bot-ish lingo or anything with the sterile AI feel.

7. Check their profiles. If they seem legit and you are interested, ask for more information like links or qualifications. If not, in the words of Nancy Reagan, "Just say no."

NB, Reporting suspected bots doesn't do anything since the moderation team is a single person.

I've been getting those messages. They're not bots because they respond to my messages. But when they offer collaborations, I'm suspicious and don't respond. I'd appreciate someone criticizing my novel more than praising it and offering suspicious collaborations. At least the person criticizing has actually read the novel, but praising it? That's just nonsense. By the way, I've gotten those messages on three different platforms: SH, RR, and purrfiction. They all follow the same pattern: praise the novel, then offer collaborations, and when there's no response, they disappear or delete the message.

In my experiences, any artist who reaches out to me is fake - or sincerely desperate for money. Either way, I'd only deal with artists with stable incomes. I don't want to end up supporting an artist's whole life with requests. I don't want that responsibility, and don't need it.

I can confirm. I've sought out a lot on Deviantart, and there's also a 30% chance the artist backs out and refunds me because they're embarrassed to even show me their work.
