I was wondering when it would be a good time start the final arc of a story and wrap things up.

My Ideas:
  • When the story demands it.
  • When your reads for chapters go down to ???% of your first chapter's reads. <-- IDK what percent is the right number here
  • When you start to rehash the same ideas.
What are your thoughts?

Option 1 if you are a writer who loves your own stories and writes as a hobby.

Option 2 If you are a writer who only cares about money/fame.

Option 3 if you are a pantser✨

1) When you run out of ideas.
2) When your views dropped way more than you expected. Every author who writes as a hobby or for money will lose motivation, and majority simply abandon their books. So, instead of abandoning, give the few readers who are still reading an ending.
3) When your MC becomes too OP, and writing any further becomes difficult and pointless since he can one slap everyone to death. As for romance or slice of life, I've no idea.
4) When your book has too many characters to keep track of.
5) Just because you want to end. Your book, your rules.
6) If you are r18 or harem book author, and your wife found out, yeah, not so good situation. She'll probably end your first.
7) If you are just a teen and writing something you shouldn't and your parents found out your patreon account and the money going to your bank account, well, they will end you first.

I personally wrote the final arc for my very first novel when the story already demands it. Well, I don't know, I'm not that popular and readers don't demand for an extension, so I guess it can be different

When you're approaching the ending you thought of.

Exactly this.

That said, this assumes a plotter's mind-set. If the writer is a pantser, then "when the story demands it" would be the better answer.

And if you're rehashing the same ideas, then that's a simple matter of you just needing to do better. That can happen for anyone, plotter or pantser, and it's a bad thing in either case. The solution, however, is not to end the story. It's to get more creative and not rehash the same ideas.

(It will happen sooner the less skilled the writer is. It's just a matter of "get gud, lol.")

I love the ending of Sengoku Youko, They handled it really well.

If you want to know what a true ending feels like, watch Sengoku youko.

Season 1 cover

Synopsis :
Aspiring samurai Shinsuke Hyoudou's world is turned upside down when he witnesses hermit Jinka Yamato and fox girl Tama Youko slay a brigands' lair in the blink of an eye. Tama happens to be katawara, a magically gifted species, who can share her powers with Jinka through a special ritual. Together, they travel the world as vigilantes to stop evil beings, be they katawara or human.

As Shinsuke learns more about this new world, he discovers that monks perform inhumane research on spiritually gifted civilians, in the hope of creating human-katawara hybrids that can fight against monsters. Soon joined by Shakuyaku—a girl they manage to save from the monks’ experiments—and other allies, the group embarks on a quest to achieve their respective dreams.

Season 2

Synopsis
The chaotic aftermath of a confrontation between Jinka Yamato and Yazen results in the power dynamics between the magically gifted katawara and humans being turned upside down. As the news of the downfall of dangaishu—the katawara-hunting monks led by Yazen—spreads across the country, rogue groups of katawara start to form, worsening the already-fragile relationship between them and humanity.

Having lost faith in his abilities, Shinsuke Hyoudou now spends his time heavily drinking in the company of Senya, a former enemy of his who controls one thousand katawara within his body. Senya indirectly causes the death of the father of Tsukiko, his newfound friend, after a surprise attack of a local god gone berserk.

Despite the circumstances, Tsukiko holds no grudge against Senya and is determined to become Shinsuke's disciple no matter what. Although Shinsuke refuses to become Tsukiko's sword instructor, he reluctantly agrees to let her travel with him and Senya. While the unlikely trio heads towards their next destination, Tama Youko continues her journey to find the trail of Jinka, the nine-tailed fox who has the power to destroy the world.

It's a 2 season show. 12eps Season 1 and 22eps Season 2. Worth it.

They're adapting from manga, the mangaka handles the ending pretty well. It's truly one of the best ending experience I've had, as expected of old school shounen.

I knowbmost of you dont want to waste time finding them up, so here's the youtube playlist of said Anime.

You can watch them on Youtube (Ani-one Asia) :

Season 1 :

Season 2 :

****

The current META of ending nowadays are "Open ending".

Just leave the story at one of the end arcs, and made sure it's so vague, it opens up as much path for every possible intepretations the reader can imagine.

Open ending are just as good as "Open office". A concept that sounds good to everyone but the readers.

They're meant to satisfy the author and publisher, as they can gain as much strong reaction from the story, and not as much as the reader.

I don't like them at all.

I'd rather see what happened to them until the end.
