Have you ever read a novel and wondered if you should drop off… then THAT weirdly specific thing happened and you couldn’t anymore. It’s not like others could understand it, but you really felt like it was a dealbreaker of some sort.

What experience was that for you?

For me, it was in The Novel’s Extra when the battle maniac ‘likeable villain’ who just wants a good fight secretly kills a security guard just doing his job. That security guard was an extra ironically and nothing comes from his death.

It just kinda felt bad that in a novel about an extra, there was an extra treated this unfairly by the story. That guy could’ve had a family. Sure, it isn’t like that villain gets praised for the personality he has, but that’s more because it isn’t useful to the main character. If he was more useful, then he would be less inconvenienced.

The fact this guy doesn’t straight up die early on for that makes my blood boil.

Can't remember the name but I remember reading this story where the mc was helping a kingdom to grow. It was really good with a lot of political intrigue, drama, and war tactics. However, after a certain point, said MC decides to join a battle himself. This is where I had to start wondering if I should stop. Firstly, the other soldiers are raping and pillaging the villages they pass through that aren't theirs and the MC isn't happy with this but does nothing because they soldiers tell him it is normal. A few chapters later, MC decides that maybe he should join the soldiers and rapes someone at knifepoint. That was it for me.

That's...quite a plot.

For me, it's usually when things feel too generic and safe. Sometimes when I notice a story repeating a pattern like 'adventure -> monster slaying -> back to tavern' without adding new spins or meaningful character development I'll just forget to check back.

It's rare for a story to make me want to put it down because I feel offended. But it's rather often that when a story is not taking risks that I start to forget it exists.

Real "If your friends jumped off a bridge would you?" type morals from the MC there, goddamn.

Worst part is, I really liked the story before and I checked a few chapters later to see if anything bad happened to MC as a result. Nope. MC took the girl as a slave, walked her past her parents burning corpses, and forced her to be his slave bride to bear his children. Fucking awful. Blacklisted the author.

Not a novel, but I remember reading the first chapter of this generic romcom manga I don't even remember the title of, and I was absolutely taken aback by the introduction of the heroine's gyaru elementary school kid sister.

I was so squicked out by that shit that I didn't even give the next page a chance. Definitely not something specific to me, as I remember many expressed the same sentiment, but there was almost just as many who found this element a welcome addition to their diet of romcom slop.

not even against going dark but damn, you gotta have class and you better really think about how you're gonna handle it. Surprised it didn't get like tugged for seemingly glorifying that shit.

Usually it happens when the author doesn't keep 'the promise'.
Once, I accidentally found a novel about a simple man dating a superhero woman. The author promised it would be a fun romance.
It wasn't. In just a several chapters, that superwoman had a very detailed sex with a dozen other superheroes, while her boyfriend was doing his (comparatively innocent) stuff elsewhere. Later, I found out the author liked to write NTR without warning his readers.
Need I say he wasn't very popular?

I think one of the stranger moments I've dropped a novel when I found out the MC was a girl.

So I start reading the novel thinking that the MC is a guy, and there's no harem tag in sight. I read the first few chapters and am pleasantly surprised that it doesn't follow the stereotypical plot you usually see.

The main character isn't overpowered. The main character has a female childhood friend. The male support character isn't just a useless pevert. In fact, there's multiple male support characters. Excellent! It really looks like the chances of a love triangle are small.

Then I figure out the MC is actually the FMC, and the story's just a generic shojo novel.

Always Mushoku tensei, just before he becomes a highschooler. I didn't follow his story just for it to end up in a misunderstanding something with that red-head, and then the constant subplot about erectile dysfunction.
