Overlord is too grim for my preference. But "A new nation announces its presence to the age of war! Though small in number they are exceptionally powerful!" is an interesting enough narrative that I watched the first two seasons of the anime before I got sick of it.

The LN is a masterpiece imo in world building, hype is built good as well, which hard to do when you have an OP protag, but I think Maruyama does it well. Sure there's no real threat to Nazarick, but there's still enough in the world to hook you into reading it.

I only watched the anime and I don't remember if I watched until season 2 or 3 (is there a season 3?). I'm an enjoyer of OP protag isekai anime, so it's right up to my alley. I also like the comedic undertones though maybe it's just me with my cheap sense of humor. The animations are good and I'm there simply to have a good time. I didn't really pay much attention to the plot.

I liked how it overlayed its world building. Like you have the Isekaied world, then the Game (Yggdrasil) system, and followed by a few glimpse of the OG world. Especially on how Maruyama used the things from Yggdrasil and Isekaied World to compare and reflect on how shitty OG world is. Hahaha

I personally don't like it. It starts out quite well, the worldbuilding is great, but it does not feel organic to me, and it just stops being interesting after a while. It lacks any meaningful stakes, which is not a bad thing in itself but often makes the story feel like seeing a pre-planned script since it's very easy to predict the outcome of most scenes. Some characters also have extremely exagerrated traits, which again is not that bad in itself, but in some cases it is pushed so far they feel artificial.

Saw a CN mention(quote-spoil it) recently that MC's world is a shithole with huge discrepancy between rich/poor (like, very bad worse, even sounding a little apocalyptical)
and that is why he likes so much the guild as its kinda the sole place where he can escapes it and see like-minded friends.

I don't mind it.

I've read the Light Novel until the end of the Holy Kingdom arc. Anime didn't get that far, and if it did, I never saw it. I googled it up, and I am not sure if it was Volume 11 or 12 what I've read, but it doesn't matter that much.

Kinda phased it out after I finished the latest novel available back then, and realizing that the next volume wasn't going to be written, let alone released, for some time, I simply gave up on it.

It caught my interest enough to marathon through all those volumes, so I didn't hate it, but as I said, I gave up on it when it looked there won't be a sequel.

I love the anime.
All 4 seasons plus holy kingdom movie. The spinoffs are fun, too.
I haven't read the LN.

I love the idea of world domination by an OP monster. The differences in POV are great.
People complain about the MC a lot, but I think he perfectly fits what an obsessed undead lich would be like. His obsession is his old comrades. He isn't supposed to progress his character, but play his part as the evil overlord.
