Favorite Author/Book/Webnovel and least favorite Author/Book/Webnovel?

Dune and Messiah (book 1 and 2) are focused on Paul,
Dune 3 is Children of Dune in which the twins, Leto Jr and his Ghanima, battle their oppressive aunt, Alia (that's my my favourite Dune novel)
Dune 4 is Emperor God, and when I dropped it. Huge time skip, and it's this mess of politics with the stalker side story of Leto Jr. the worm and the girl who he foresaw would kill him, or something?

Couldn't care enough to finish it.

I read books for the characters. Young Leto II and Ghanima were fun. The emperor God wasn't.

Ah yeah, now I remember. Barely made it through Messiah, could not finish God Emperor. Man that was a while ago!

Favorite book: Chaos Mode (the most humanizing and compassionate account of suicidal depression I have ever encountered, also telepathic horse overlords)
Least favorite book: There are a few books (Hitler's for example) that achieved some level of fame for drawing dangerous conclusions using logical fallacies. They deserve to exist but really are not healthy to read outside of a graduate ethics class.

Aside from those mentioned already:

Tad Williams. Otherland was fantastic, as was the Green Angel Tower trilogy.

T.A. Baron was big for me in my youth. I read his Merlin series instead of Harry Potter. Not sure how he would hold up if I went back and reread.

Jacqueline Carry wrote some nice content in the Kushiel's Scion series. The only real smut fic I ever read.

I'll throw R.L Stine into the mix with Goosebumps just for being a legendary short story writer.

Another dark horse is the mad lad that wrote the Animorphs. Talk about someone who defied expectations they themselves created.

As for least favorite, well, that Harry potter writer can disappear anytime soon and Id be okay with that.

I read two of the books (out of sequence, I think the second and fifth, in the opposite order) and saw three episodes (the first two and one other random one). The books were really impressive - dark, complex stuff that the show came very, very close to capturing well. Kind of surprising, really.

I remember the first time I saw it and thinking that it looked kind of silly. But... the external perception of that series does not do it justice.

Kind of like how Watership Down is like oh hey rabbits haha no

My least favorite novel currently is my own novel. LOL
Since compared to the other fav novel they are way better, mine is not up there yet.

My all-time favourite book is probably Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Such a perfect feature-length dark fairy tale, and a real shame the author's not done anything meaty since.

Least favourite - and I wouldn't call him bad, more just that I find him frustrating - is Brandon Sanderson. I did really enjoy Mistborne, but nowadays I feel like he spins out three or four novels a year to explore all of his ideas for magic systems, and leaves the characters and plot for each shallow and underdeveloped.

Why are they your favorite and least favorite?

Anne MacCaffrey is both a favorite and least favorite (I don't need explanations for my space dragons, damnit!). I also like Anne Rice (the vampire lore building was fantastic back in the day), Cassandra Clare (in addition to the Mortal Instruments, she wrote "The Very Secret Diaries of the LotR Fellowship" as a gag online which detailed the very hilarious and often pervy thoughts of the fellowship in point/diary form), Qian Shan Cha Ke (some of my favorite Ancient China webnovels were written by them), and Ai Shei Shei (same reason as Qian's).

Least favorite is probably Robert Jordan. I enjoyed The Wheel of Time immensely as a teen but felt the rest of the novels dropped in quality. Tried to reread them as an adult starting from the beginning and wanted to jab my eyes out. Honorable mention for Jean M Auel because she took a steaming dump on her series with a book that felt like she was contractually obligated to write. I mean, it started out as neanderthal rape fantasy to begin with so it wasn't a high bar but she pole vaulted it.

Favorite book is Dragonsong or Dragonsinger. Very uncomplicated romp with mini-space-dragons that doesn't waste a lot of time on extras. Plus, they tie in pretty well with the Dragonriders Trilogy, which are more adult.

Most hated book would be the unedited version of Stephen King's The Stand. I made the mistake of trying to read that and quickly discovered why his publishing company refused until they could cut a massive amount out of it. He has so much unnecessary content. So much. The normal book is a pretty decent read but the unedited version is just brutal.

Favorite Webnovel would probably be Let Me Pursue You. LMPY always makes me crack up because the MC tries everything to better her family's life, including setting up a scenario where the ML will "accidentally" affect her reputation and have to take responsibility by marrying her but he wants to marry her in a legit way and can't ever picture taking advantage of her in that way.

Least favorite Webnovel would be Transmigrated into a Villainous Family. I lost brain cells trying to read that one. The author wanted to do all of the things which included everything from strong female lead who transmigrates in to a sex-crazed ML who believes dicking down the MC is all he needs to do in a relationship. There is also faceslapping where the villains have IQs of teabags. They also threw in a child with a split personality that wants to murder his siblings for good measure. I got about a third through the story and then questioned my sanity.

I made it to eight. In the first two books, I found myself wishing I had his ability to describe settings and events in so much detail you felt like you were there. By book three, I wished he had MY ability to just describe key points and be done with it... By book six, I felt the story and characters had grown beyond his ability to control (which, given the onset of the medical condition that eventually killed him, was probably accurate), and only planned to read one more, but found the next two books at deep discount (and heard that he was dying and working with another author, I believe Brian K. Sanderson, to make sure the series did get finished - by deep, I mean the hardcover for 8 cost less than the half priced paperback for 7 did) so gave them a shot but they were such a mess that I just couldn't go on.
