Heh - I had a novel (well, novella) that kept getting so dark I had to step away from it for a few days. Sadly, the computer it was on crashed before I got back to it the last time I stepped away and I haven't worked up the nerve to try and rewrite it yet.

My situation was different, I was scared of government and women from whole. That novel was not harem, it was based on survival of a man who is alone in whole world because all men died.
