Just rush an ending, and tie up one or two major plot points. Maybe a bit weirdly paced, a bit unexpected. Might make no sense. But at least it's an ending.

I would say to stop because they may come back to it later or they can leave as an open ended ending that the fans can be left to interpret.

I'd rather the author just admit that they have a skill issue and drop the book while informing readers than rushing a dogshit ending.

I'd do both - write a rushed ending and say "I'm abandoning this book for a while. In case I never come back to it, here is how it might have gone... Consider this the TV version of Game of Thrones, and maybe you'll get a (hopefully better) print one eventually..."

All these "I might be back to continue" is just white lies that will never happen.

You can go AWOL without the headsup or tell me about castrating the work, it is shitty either way.

Whereas an ending, a very shitty one no less, tells me that the work is done. DONE. D-O-N-E.

There is no hope for a continuation, there might be a hope for redo, but I am not banking my cheques.

"Just stops?" Is not that like a ongoing story similar to a running train. Then suddenly there is a buffer stop in front of it, immediately slows down and stop. The readers who rides it can the feel of over 3g's going to the front. Some injured or cry because they like the ride, but have to forcefully evacuate because the rides ends there.

If you leave it unfinished, it leaves an opening for fans to take it up, or another author to take over with your permission, thus giving the story a proper ending
