Is this a work around to prevent authors from blocking readers?

That's a good question... but I am pretty sure you cant comment with a disabled profile? So blocking would be pointless maybe? Honestly I am not sure... That's how I always thought it worked though so I might be wrong-nya.

I thought the same too but I believe, the blocked can still rate, though not sure if they can write review.
Would be interesting to know if they could not.

You could block them here, on the forum, which would prevent you from seeing messages from them. You merely get "blocked user".

Click on their name, get this screen, and click "Ignore"

I doubt it prevents them from interacting with your story, though.

Account Settings -> Users Blocked -> Very bottom of page

There is a textbox. Enter their username, then press "block user.”

They cannot comment on chapters, review the story, or comment on your profile. Not sure about rating.

Ignoring someone on the forum does not block them on the main site, I believe. I had to manually do both to deal with certain problem children.
You go to somebody's profile on SH you can block a user from commenting on your chapters. It's located on the upper right hand corner of a user, But if somebody privates their profile it makes it impossible to block them through that method. And people who private their profiles can comment on your work.

though not sure if they can write review.
They can, and some people use disabled profile alts to review bomb stories unfairly. It's pretty despicable and pathetic

I agree. I thought blocked users would be unable to review bomb but I guess I'm wrong to assume this.
All we can do is call them out ~ but it should be improved so it can't happen as often.

Calling them out it didn't work out for me. Neither on this site, nor on the previous one.

This is definitely that could help us authors against review bombing and trolling behaviours from certain problem children. I am surprised we are not offered even this basic safety net.

Update: Just verified, I can manual add users in the profile --> blocked users---> add their name.

Guess will have to go with this method.

I'm confused. I thought we could block even private profiles, yet they can still review bomb even if we do???

Everyone can create alts and review bomb whatever they want. Sadly.
But this isn't only a problem on this site. The only thing you can do is report those accounts when found.
I see...
Reminds me of a user who was adamant in claiming the review system was totally perfect even when I brought this concept up. People are strange

y that, do you mean your readers/metrics fell off due to a couple of anonymous/troll ratings?
A common practice on the Royal Road was the throwaway, empty profiles used to rate a single story, then never to be used again.

They weren't necessarily invisible, just a single use, empty, and subsequently abandoned. They could be blocked, but since you didn't know about them until they left the review, you couldn't do anything about them as they were never used again. You could report them, but it has no effect since the moderation did nothing about them, even if it was obvious they were used only against the single story, and then never used again. Not on forum, not to review others, just fire and forget. Spam accounts, basically.

It did massive damage, and they could easily destroy built up rank and position without the chance of ever recovering.

The reason why hate that site that much is that it was far too difficult to rise the ranks, and far too easy to be destroyed. Complaining about them there led to the more being created, and reporting those spawned more and more, until I was forced to leave (much to everyone's amusement)

I thought those were not a thing here on the Scribble Hub. I never even considered it.

Until I went on the unnecessary tangent about ratings, and then I was attacked by the account like this:

I didn't know those were even possible. Note there is not even the report button, and of course, there is no block.

...but considering it was rather personal and directed against me, I suspected that it won't be used against the other users.

After all, the Scribble Hub doesn't make your story that vulnerable, so there as a very little effect on me there other than feeling insulted.

I don't know if it downvoted my story here. I didn't notice any change, and there was no reason to complain.

Until this thread came and I realized they are a thing after all.

Coming from Royal Road it is not a shock.
Just goes to reinforce my previous argument that people wanted to kill me over ~ the 5-star rating metric standing on its own is meaningless.
If it is backed up by valid reviews that state the reason for the scores, then it becomes important detail to read through for readers considering whether to cash in or trash out, but if all that's there is the number, it doesn't matter anymore; it says nothing about the quality of a book, because it could be fictitious.

Sorry, I know most people already understand this, but some people think the opposite, and it's mind-boggling to me. Makes me wonder what they do in their spare time and how they ever manage to enjoy anything if they don't properly vet what they look-up. I say this while including examples that go beyond just books. App store is a great example of similar behavior, in both the downvote and upvote direction (lots of 5-star bots).

Could you try, block me, and then post in this thread?

I will then try to submit the review and the comment on your story. It could even be a positive review, since if it passes through I wouldn't be able to delete it even if I wanted to, and I don't want to sink it, but it is necessary to test in practice how this all works.

Then we will know for sure if blocking even does anything.

I have blocked you now. Please try. try again.
