Need some ideas: names of factions with some flavor. (Turkish and/or Hungarian)

So here is the deal.

Context:
In my story, everyone on Earth is given powers and isekai-ed in a hostile world.

A lot of people died etc etc and when the dust settled, 2 to 3 years later everyone would try to form little groups, clans, tribes and nations.

For my purpose, at some point, my MCs need the help of people with a powerful cavalry.

===
In the story, some people from İstanbul/Turkey or something, because of their special powers, end up building a settlement that has an army with heavy cavalry in the form of Cataphract using dire grey wolves...

OR

People from Budapest/Hungary (also because of special powers) will have a settlement, whose army has light cavalry hussars that ride falcons-like Rocs or gryphons...
===

I would like some suggestions for names of these Turkish and/or Hungarian settlements...

Or Just names for these factions?

Due to the magic of cinema/ suspense of disbelief, everyone will speak the same language. (English)

But still, I would like names that sound like a Turkish person or Hungarian would call the town/village/city that they are building.

Obviously, I am not Turkish or Hungarian. But I just really like to have hussars or cataphracts in my story.
----

Also for context, in this fictional world, there are already people who want to just rebuild the old world order according to the Earth's nations before the isekai,
and they call themselves something lame like...

The UREF.

the United Reconstituted Earth Federation and they have a city called, I dun no, Neo-TokYorkMoscaLonSeoJin.

So all the factions that are not part of the UREF, are more aligned with we "want our own thing" and not just call themselves New-Hungary or New-Turkey.

Hungarian Black Legion sounds kinda cool... and is historical (?) So I am also kinda are open to names that would just be for a force or a mercenary band.

For example, I hope to add in American nomads that call themselves, "The Rangers" in a very wild west kinda way.

I wouldn't say no to something with a legendary/myth connection like the way the English could be having with an Avalon or Camelot, or the Chinese with "Flowers and Fruit Mountain".

So suggesting Turkish and Hungarian Faction/Settlement names will be a great help.

But if you have suggestions of other countries and what their faction will be called feel free to drop one in.

Like India? Ireland? Scottland? Indonesia? The Philippines? Japan? Thailand? Africa? Egypt?

You get it. I am not going to list all the nations of the world.

Side Note:
In this new world, would you personally name your new settlement/faction with some kind of cultural connection?
Or just call it... Meme-land or Nya City?

When I was working on international supervillains I found it useful to research the mythology of a country (via Google and Wiki as I didn't need accuracy, just names) - that might be useful; found a few cool Hungarian ones but not sure where my files are at the moment (and most were related to elements or weather).

Do you have suggestions for Russian Faction names?

I was hoping to add a group of jet-pack-wearing Russians that live within a Dwarven City, They run a bar called the 'Kosmos'. And have spelunking adventures.
Nothing comes to my mind. @Simple_Russian_Boi Might be more helpful. Oh, while we are at it, can you give examples of how other groups call themselves?

The name - translation:
Летуны/Letuni - Flyers.
Покорители воздуха/Pokoritely Vozduha - Air Conquerors.
You also might want to read the wiki about Russian gangs if you want to implement some in the story. Usually, the gangs here are named after the place they operate in.

I have been summoned.

If you want, I can give you some current Hungarian towns or city names, or if you have ideas about what those cities in your story represent, I can come up with something appropriate, too.

Or you can copy existing cities. Like "Székesfehérvár"

Which is historically a city where kings were coronated. Hence the name. Székes=meaning the throne, in this case. Fehér=as in white. Vár=as in castle. So it would be something like The throne in the white castle. Or the white throne in the castle, depending on how you want to interpret it. I should look it up myself, but I am lazy about which one has the correct historical meaning behind it.

Anyway, if you give me ideas of what the cities in mind do, I can give you names fitting for them.

So that's Hungarian for "The Toilet in a Low End Fast Food Joint"? :biggrin_s:

Here is what comes to my mind:

Turkish-Inspired Faction (Cataphracts on Dire Wolves)

1. Bozkır Aslanları (Lions of the Steppe) – A name invoking both power and the vast open plains.
2. Gök Kurtlar (Sky Wolves) – A reference to the legendary Ashina wolf of Turkic mythology.
3. Ateş Hanlığı (Fire Khanate) – Suggests both leadership and destruction.
4. Kanatlı Kurtlar (Winged Wolves) – A mystical take on their cavalry.
5. Yıldırım Ordusu (Lightning Army) – Denotes speed and devastating attacks.
6. Gök Kalesi (Sky Fortress) – A stronghold name.
7. Kurtbayır (Wolf Ridge) – Sounds like a proper fortress town.
8. Alevtürk (Fire Turks) – A fiery name suggesting resilience.
9. Demir Yeleliler (Iron-Maned) – A poetic nod to armored riders.
10. Tengri’nin Pençesi (Tengri’s Claw) – A divine warrior order.

Hungarian-Inspired Faction (Hussars on Rocs/Gryphons)
1. Turul Lovasai (Riders of the Turul) – Inspired by the mythical Hungarian bird.
2. Arany Szárny (Golden Wing) – Evoking wealth and majesty.
3. Sasvár (Eagle Fortress) – A stronghold name.
4. Hegyfarkasok (Mountain Wolves) – Sounds like a hardy, tactical force.
5. Hadak Útja (Path of the Warriors) – A reference to Hungarian mythology.
6. Égiek Hadereje (Army of the Skies) – A celestial military force.
7. Sárkánylovagok (Dragon Knights) – A mix of legend and power.
8. Villám Huszárok (Lightning Hussars) – Fast, deadly cavalry.
9. Szélvihar (Stormwind) – Quick and overwhelming, like a tempest.
10. Karvaly Rend (Order of the Hawk) – A noble warrior order.

Other Cultures’ Potential Factions
1. India: Garuda Sena (Army of Garuda) – Sky warriors riding giant birds.
2. Ireland: Tuatha Ríogach (Royal Tuatha) – A mythical kingdom name.
3. Scotland: Stormclad Clan – A Highlander warrior society.
4. Indonesia: Naga Laut (Sea Dragons) – A powerful naval force.
5. Philippines: Haribon’s Heirs (Heirs of the Haribon/Eagle) – An elite force.
6. Japan: Ryūsei no Bushi (Meteor Samurai) – Samurai warriors of the falling star.
7. Thailand: Naga Guard – Protectors associated with the serpent deity.
8. Egypt: Anubian Guard – A shadowy, elite faction inspired by Anubis.
9. Africa: Imbizo (Gathering of Warriors) – A pan-African warband.
10. Viking/Norse-Inspired: Vargrheim (Wolf-Home) – A berserker settlement.

As for Russian-inspired faction names that fit their jetpack-wearing, spelunking, and bar-running vibe, here is my thoughts:
1. Zvezdnyye Bratya (Звездные Братья) – Star Brothers: A tight-knit group with cosmic aspirations, fitting their love for flight and adventure.
2. Kosmonavty (Космонавты) – The Cosmonauts: A simple yet iconic name, playing on Russia’s space history.
3. Podzemnye Stranniki (Подземные Странники) – Underground Wanderers: Emphasizes their spelunking lifestyle and nomadic spirit.
4. Letuchiye Medvedi (Летучие Медведи) – Flying Bears: A fun and imposing name referencing both Russian bears and their jetpacks.
5. Shtormoviki (Штурмовики) – The Stormtroopers: Evokes elite assault units while also referencing rapid aerial movement.
6. Gromoviki (Громовики) – Thunder Walkers: Sounds like they strike from above like thunder, perfect for jetpack warriors.
7. Krylya Peruna (Крылья Перуна) – Wings of Perun: Named after Perun, the Slavic god of thunder, tying into their aerial prowess.
8. Podzemnaya Eskadra (Подземная Эскадра) – The Underground Squadron: A fitting name if they operate like an elite flight crew.
9. Veterany Kosmosa (Ветераны Космоса) – Veterans of Space: Maybe they think they’re the last space travelers from Earth?
10. Zemlyanye Kosmonavty (Земляные Космонавты) – Earthly Cosmonauts

Sorry if the reply is too long. I had so much fun thinking about this.
As you can see, I lOVE world building ??
I hope it helps you

Nah. Those toilets are never white.
Never used the bathroom in a White Castle, but strongly suspect the bathrooms smell better than the food (unless you really LIKE the smell of steamed onions, then they probably smell the same)

I don't know anything about Turkish or Hungarian, but I do know Polish.

Kot Gacek (Gacek Cat)
Smok Wawelski (Wawel Dragon)
Złotej Kaczce (Golden Duck)

Those are legendary and mythical figures from Poland. The place where they are located are famous tourist attractions.

examples of how other groups call themselves?
Hmm... there is a Chinese group called "Lùlín / Green Forest" that has a territorial dispute with an English group called the "Robins"
An American vigilante that calls themselves "The League" and lives in a settlement they call "The Tower" (It's not a tower)
Or Russian fortress city protected by multiple layers of walls and energy shields called "Matryoshka "

I am slowly filling in the world but for the first story arc I only need a faction with cavalry... other factions may get mentioned in passing conversations

but I haven't given them much thought.

What's more... I don't know, for me... Russian gives off industrial aesthetics to me (Is that racist?) so I kinda lean into steampunk Mechas, and retro-futuristics powers/themes. Giant Mecha gundams in the shape of halve man halve Bears etc (Mecha Furries?)

gangs here are named after the place they operate in.
Good to know.
Thats interesting
From what I know Chinese triads tend to either sound like generic business or just say what the scenery is like "Big River Gang"

Székesfehérvár
That is good, it fits well because the group will have a few leaders who coincidently awaken powers that synergize well, (Beast taming / Army Enchant Buffs etc) So it matches their ambition to build a kingdom.

Here is what comes to my mind:
Thanks, that's great and a lot for me to work on!

I like "Hadak Útja (Path of the Warriors) – A reference to Hungarian mythology."
I will have to find out more about it first tho. :blob_hmm_two: :blob_hmm_two: :blob_hmm_two:

Smok Wawelski (Wawel Dragon)

Neither turkish nor hungarian but some interesting things are revealed if you goodle budapest hungaria gryphon like the Tulu which is a mythical falcon from the region, which in legends apparently was the father of the first king of the Arpaden who were a hungarian kingdom.
Just create with this information people that want to reinstate the Arpaden kingdom with a Arpaden inheritor.

Turul. It is a non-existent bird, purely mythical.

The ancient legend says it appeared before us, telling us danger was/is coming, so we always packed up and started moving as we followed it. (when we were still nomads). Then we arrived at where we are today (old Pannonia), it appeared for the last time, signaling this is where we should settle down.

There is another legend that says we followed a white deer, but both are accepted myths.

The ancient legend
Yes, that's how I ended up with Roc riding...

I wanted a "Here comes the Cavalry" moment in the last act... I wanted a faction who are initially hardened survivors and pragmatic and a little isolationist, but really... they have a "heart of gold" to have a bit of Gap Moe.

At first, I was looking at heavy cataphracts for a more LOTR feel and learned the Turkish national animal was the grey wolf (which is cool). Then because I was in the area, I looked at hussars and learned of the Tulu, which is "mostly depicted as a hawk or falcon".

I really like the idea of the "cavalry" arriving from the sky, but don't know if light cavalry swooping down on giant falcons has the same feel in the story as a full-on Hammer to Anvil cavalry charge...

Will probably decide as I write the scene what to focus on but right now going to add gryphon to the mix, because gryphons are falcon/eagle adjacent, have a lot more meat on them and can slam down on the battlefield from the sky, and stay on the ground to wreck everybody.

But strictly speaking gryphons I don't know if or don't think it is a Hungarian symbol.

Ah! Raptor riding Uhlan with an Anti-tank rifle!
Of course. In Hungarian, “Hadak Útja” literally means “Road of the Armies” or “Path of the Warriors” in old legends.
It is equivalent to the Milky Way.
In ancient Hungarian beliefs, the Milky Way was thought to be the path that warriors’ souls take after death as they ride into the afterlife.
Some versions of the legend say it’s the road taken by fallen warriors to reach their next battle in another world.
It connects to shamanic and steppe nomad traditions, where warriors are deeply tied to spiritual journeys and celestial imagery.
If you consider a legendary unit of their army, I suggest you use “Hadak Lovasai” (Riders of the Warriors’ Path) to make it more meaningful.

This might be too much, but I find it alluring for my own stories when I make up a belief system for world-building. For example, in this case, you can give them a belief system where they see themselves as eternal warriors, riding to war in the name of fate.
