Fanfiction Definition: Fiction written by a fan of, and featuring characters from, a particular TV series, movie, etc.

Historical fiction definition: The genre of literature, film, etc., comprising narratives that take place in the past and are characterized chiefly by an imaginative reconstruction of historical events and personages.

If historical fantasy is fanfiction then I have learned that I am a fanfiction author.

@SailusGebel how does this affect your thread on fanfiction?

This is a concerningly good question. I'm gonna say no, going by the spirit rather than word of the definition, but good arguments could be made the other way around.

Would Historical Fiction be considered Historical Fanfic?

No, it's literally from the fact that Fanfics are derived from an already fictional medium. Any argument about this is a distortion of the original usage of fanfiction, and honestly it's tiktok level brainrot to stretch the definition this way. Reminds me of people calling the Divine Comedy biblical fanfiction.

That's an even weirder question than the one I've been tempted to toss out:

I've been involved with role-playing games since 1979. In the last few years, I got hooked on some licensed ones (primarily Doctor Who RPG - originally called "Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space" from Cubicle7 and The Monty Python Cocurricular Mediaeval Reenactment Programme from Exalted Funeral/Crowbar Creative). Would adventures for licensed games be considered fan fiction:
1) Always.
- OR -
2) Only if they use the licensed characters
- OR -
3) Only if they follow an existing storyline to some degree

I don't even get this question are you writing, recording, or producing something to distribute everything that happens in that rpg session for the sake of acting as a derivative to that piece of media? If you're just playing that game then no that's what it's for, for you to interact and engage with the material in that medium.

Referring more to creating adventure scenarios (I mean, I know the ones like "Scooby Who" - The Fourth Doctor meeting Mystery Inc. - would be Fan Fiction, but an would an adventure in the England of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" be?)

That stuff just falls under fan labor, fan works, or user generated content. Fanfiction is like writing a whole novel based on the adventure.

Yes
Honestly I don't know why someone would want the slur label of fanfic for their work.
I wouldn't know who either. As a historical fiction writer, the idea of it even being considered fanfiction bothers me.

By this definition, Bernard Cromwell's Winter King series, a well known historical fiction series, is fanfiction due to being based off of Arthurian Legend, an already fictional medium.

Arthurian Legend is the historical fan-fiction with fantasy elements in itself.

Half of the Chinese history is probably written this way too.

And most of the similar texts around the world aren't faring that much better either.

Of course you could write fan-fiction on historical events.

That's how historians used to work.

Just wait until that guy from Royal Road arrives and would want to ban you
