Got the idea while reading Reincarnated as a Phoenix by ACFoster99.

The only Requirement is that the country/kingdom Princess is from is ruled by a Queen. The country/kingdom doesn't have to be matriarchal, just currently ruled by a lone unmarried, at the time the story begins, Queen.

Optional Ideas/requests:
  1. Isekaied/Reincarnated Princess. Gender bending is fine, but would like to see the MC's previous life be female.
  2. Princess somehow believes she is a dragon cursed or forced into human form in some manner regardless of what she's told.
  3. Dragon Dad is one of the strongest being in the country/kingdom if not the continent/world.
  4. Princess was kidnaped and then rescued By Dragon Dad when she was 3-6 years old or if you want her older, something messed with her memories and she was taken and rescued by Dragon Dad between 10 and 13.
  5. Due to a reward offered Princess is caught sometime when she is between 13-20 yrs by scammers trying their luck, much to the Queen and her Court's frustration and amusement as some didn't even really try.
  6. Dragon Dad and the Queen know each other, either she stayed with him as his "captured" Princess and she left willing as something happened to the rest of her family that required her to rule or he was somehow subdued and believed dead and she was forcibly taken, and unable to return for various reasons.
  7. Dragons can only take humanoid form to be with a chosen non dragon mate and have to wait a certain number of years of authors choice before doing so again, the birth/pregnancy of the first child with their chosen mate allows them to stably remain in humanoid form until their mate's death.
  8. Dragon Dad is Princess' true father but doesn't realize until the Queen tells him.
  9. Children of Dragons and their humanoid mates will always be the race of the non dragon mate's, rarely will a child show any true draconic traits/abilities outside acquiring higher/denser magic reserves and an affinity to their dragon parents element(s).
  10. The most common Dragon Traits that show up are Scale Armor, elemental breath, elemental claws, and elemental resistances and weaknesses.

Okay, I already have a full idea.
Princess is abducted by an antagonistic insurrectionist group with backing from rival kingdoms, Dragon rescues Princess, doesn't know she's a princess, lives somewhere isolated and hard to get to, and the kingdoms believe Princess was kidnapped by Dragon instead.

Maybe you can have the dragon in this case be more like an aloof, clueless, not so smart or diligent character to explain why he wouldn't just try harder to find where she actually belonged.
This has some extra room to have a longer first part filled with misunderstandings and such.

Also maybe save transformation stuff until he actually hooks up with the queen because god am I tired of dragon stories giving the dragon a transformation and then they basically aren't a dragon anymore.
There's no difference between a transformed dragon and a really powerful human mage.

I was almost thinking a shrek-like thing. Knight kidnaps the princess in an effort to marry her. Dragon hears about it and rescues the princess, then, being unable to actually communicate, raises her. Thus begins the "rescue the princess trapped by a dragon" myth. Poor dragon was only trying to help!!

Probably should have mentioned that, may have even thought of it, instead of letting it be an implied possibility.

Oh well, can't think of everything, which is a good thing for something like this honestly.

Sounds interesting.

I had a D&D scenario that kind of twisted the trope on its ear - the PCs were sent to "rescue" a princess allegedly kidnapped by gnomes.
Turns out the gnomes were her friends; they overheard the man she is supposed to marry planning to kill her during the honeymoon, after assassins kill her parents so he can be the sole ruler of the land, but nobody listens to gnomes, so she escaped with their help... Could just have the dragon be her friend in this scenario - she met it when it was a baby no larger than she is as an adult, and now it's half-grown and still her best friend, saving her from the evil man who just wants her lands...

If you or anyone else does that or similar just remember that the Princess is the ruling Queen in the future.

Why does she have to be a princess?

What if the king sacrificed a peasant girl dressed up as a princess to trick the dragon, and the dragon decided to raise her as his own, teach her to be a badass military leader to one day go back and crush the king?

I dunno

The funny thing is that I read a Chinese novel with almost the exact same premise.

So in this story the princess lost a succession battle against her more competent sister. Her court mage or well magic teacher cast a curse on her that turned her into a dragon. She did this so she could protect the princess from her sister who was going to silence her as she was a threat to her rule.
When the knights came into to take out the princess they saw the dragon and thought the dragon killed the princess. They immediately took it upon themselves to 'avenge' the princess.
A black dragon passes by and sees a young dragon being besieged by humans.
He swoops down and rescues her.
She is terrified because an evil black dragon has kidnapped her (a princess).
The black dragon thinks she's an actual young dragon who ate a princess.
He reprimands her for attacking a human kingdom when she is so weak.

Anyway the story is about a black dragon who wants the young dragon he adopted to call him dad.
All while the princess wants to reclaim her kingdom with the help of the knowledge she learns from a very strong black dragon.

Oh, I like. Hmm. I am pretty much settled on writing in my setting, so I need to decide on a kingdom where the story would fit. Probably one of the Allied Nations to the east; they are currently not detailed but are a coalition of smaller nations.

I have enough lined up that I am probably not going to write this anytime soon, but I am tossing it into my ideas file.

Tell me what this novel is called. I would read the (redacted) out of that.

Hm... The premise also kinda reminds me of the Dragon Daddy Diaries. Yes, it's a real light novel. The execution is pretty bad, though. I wonder how it got published.
