We've had this discussion before. How the smut to not smut ratio isn't particularly bad. My issue isn't that. No, it's the fact that I find so many novels with good concepts that appeal to me, only to look at the tags, and BAM!!! Smut. Why are all you smut authors so creative? Be boring. Be lame. Leave some for the people who don't like romance. Please.
I have a solution for that.

So, when you want to eat a banana, and after you peel it there's a darkened part on the bottom or the top. So you slice the part and eat the rest.

That's a solution.

Romance and smut are not the same thing, even though they are often roomates.
I prefer to think of them as "Friends with Benefits"...

I rarely (but occasionally) write smut, and never INTENTIONALLY read it myself (either I follow a friend's recommendation or don't see the tags ... or it's an Anita Blake type situation where the first book in a series was NOT smut but the series devolves into 90% smut pretty quickly) so don't know if I fit on this poll.
Everything is smut if you muddle the definition hard enough. The meaning of a word in its use in a shared language.
In the immoral ... er, Immortal words of Tom Lehrer:

Smut!
Give me smut and nothing but!
A dirty novel I can't shut
If it's uncut
And unsubt- le

I've never quibbled
If it was ribald
I would devour where others merely nibbled

As the judge remarked the day that he
Acquitted my Aunt Hortense
"To be smut
It must be ut-
Terly without redeeming social importance."
Or -
Pornographic pictures I adore
Indecent magazines galore
I like them more
If they're hard core

(Bring on the obscene movies, murals, postcards, neckties
Samplers, stained-glass windows, tattoos, anything!

More, more, I'm still not satisfied!)

Stories of tortures
Used by debauchers
Lurid, licentious, and vile
Make me smile

Novels that pander
To my taste for candor
Give me a pleasure sublime
(Let's face it, I love slime.)

All books can be indecent books
Though recent books are bolder
For filth (I'm glad to say) is in
The mind of the beholder

When correctly viewed
Everything is lewd
(I could tell you things about Peter Pan
And the Wizard of Oz, there's a dirty old man!)

I thrill
To any book like Fanny Hill
And I suppose I always will
If it is swill
And really fil- thy

Who needs a hobby like tennis or philately?
I've got a hobby: rereading Lady Chatterley

But now they're trying to take it all
Away from us unless
We take a stand, and hand in hand
We fight for freedom of the press

In other words
Smut! (I love it)
Ah, the adventures of a slut
Oh, I'm a market they can't glut
I don't know what
Compares with smut
Hip hip hooray!

Let's hear it for the Supreme Court!
Don't let them take it away!

HOW DARE YOU !!!
You dare complain about smut !?
Just look at yaoi stories !
> Point at dozens of stories about TON OF ORIGINALITY (fortune teller, matchmaker, shop, merchant, chef, some of them that Chinese novels stopped doings despite being good trends)
:blob_hmm_two: Is there a correlation between perversion and creativity? There's definitely a correlation between creativity and insanity.

:blob_shock: Does that mean there's a correlation between perversion and insanity?!
Yes,
azmiran probably would disagree on this (already did i think)
but i once said that there is a philosopher that once tried to explain that libido corelate with "imagination"
And as someone very horny, i'm kinda a living specimen proof of it.

Forgot the guy's name. Was quite a classic philospher name i think.

>>> Btw, a small secret that people/vast majority seems to have a misunderstanding on.
Its not that geniuses have a loose screw/insane.
But that its having a loose screw/insanity that makes a genius.
The cart before the horse - misunderstanding.
Its having a loose screw that cause the person to turn into one. A prerequisite of sort.

Its this insanity and loose screw, that allow what should be "normal brain" to access things that "normal brain people" wouldnt think of.
But people see "genius" first THEN "insanity" and figure out a pattern/rule/saying that "all geniuses have a loose screw" when in fact its the reverse.
Though ofc not all insane people are geniuses.
But to tldr : its like a cultivation root, a "necessity"

That's actually fascinating. I never thought of it like that, but now that you point it out I can see the logic. Next time someone calls me insane I have the perfect comeback. :blob_evil:

I write and read it. Never posted any of my smut to a public story though. It's why I still haven't uploaded Black Veil as that's like 60% smut.

And some smut I've read simply because of another tag that made me question my sanity but made me super curious (body horror for example) or I know the translation is wacked (Acorns is a word that should never be used to describe anything in smut). Then there is stuff like Lucia and Marriage of Convience where the rest of the plot is just too good to avoid because of smut.

Romance and smut are not the same thing, even though they are often roomates.
Oh my god, they were roomates!

Ha ha kind of why I like when you can mark specific chapters for mature/explicit content. Like, my story has open door explicit scenes... every 13+ chapters, for the most part (for the main plot, with a few extra for a side pairing that can be skipped for the main plot but are more about the development of their specific relationship from friends with benefits to alloaro queerplatonic).

So I have the sexual content tag but not smut, since it's such a small part of the overall content, but I do sometimes wonder if people give it a pass assuming there's more explicit content than there really is.

(I mean OP doesn't like romance and it is that, so probably would give it a pass anyway, but for others, you know?)
