It feels like every time I read a new fantasy story, the antagonists are always some shadowy evil organization.

It feels beyond over played at this point.

And it’s always like something to do with demons, or cultists or demon worshipers.

I’ve seen a couple stories that diverge from the demon cult troupe. If you’re gonna do an underground evil organization at least do that much. I’m not sure if you’d call the Defias Brotherhood a shadowy organization, but I think it counts, I want at least that much novelty if you’re making a shadowy organization. I don’t think I’m asking for much considering wow is 20 years old.

Well, the Defias brotherhood are fairly justified. They did all the work, and never got paid.

It's almost as icky as making union members into bad guys.

The best bad guys are people who think they're doing the right thing, but often using the wrong ways. The Scarlet Crusade are a good example. I am sure there's a number of reason to really dislike them, but for most common soldier in the ranks? They probably think they're on the good side.

Shadowy groups aren't all bad, but it depends on how the writer uses them and why they include them.

Bunch of random blood cultist who want to destroy the world don't generally make a lot of sense. But make great mooks to kill in games.

I wasn’t really trying to use the example as an overall example of villains and motives, just to point out how there can be more to a shadowy organization than demon cultists.

An example of how the troupe can be used for something as unique as ‘disgruntled tradie pirates’. Like just look at that bastardized description and then compare it to something generic like ‘demon worshipers’

It just dominates the trashy lower shelves of online. Look in a library.

Sure. And historical shadow organisations like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn are absolutely worth reading about to get a good view of what goes on in those circles.

But sometimes you just need a bunch of demon summonings Hellions to wreck Paragon City and justify some skull smashing from The Green Incredible NotHulk.

I just had an original idea! I’m going to incorporate a random unneeded shady organization that is bad at their job and is always outsmarted by the protagonist!

That's why my shadowy organizations in my webnovel aren't shadowy at all and operate at the same level as ordinary people (at least most of the time.) Shadowy organizations don't make sense unless they have a single direct purpose and multiple indirect ones. For example, transporting corporation where MC is employed, direct is, well, an ordinary international transporting corporation, indirect is to help supernatural with storing, transporting, and keeping the riches they have outside the banking institutions. The problem of shadowy organizations and how not make them stale is to frame them properly.

Well, then how else would likeminded people or even just one ambitious person with the plan to overthrow the current rule do things with?

Screaming loud on top of their lungs right in front of the establishment? The only time they get to be out and proud and possibly not get JFKed is when they have a safe haven and prowess to go up against the establishment. And that is a long long way.

A shadowy organization exist because once known, it will disappear like sugar cubes into water.

We need more comedic relief team rocket type "shady" organizations

One of the audionovels my wife listened to literally had a bad guy group called "Shadowy Organization" or something close to that. Had to laugh every time I heard it. She stopped listening to that one when I was around... :D

Ah yeah - it was kind of worse than that, now that I think about it. Believe the story was "Saving Noraa" and the group was "Mysterious Corporation"

Are you the shadowy organization?

You might be.

Because if you aren't a shadowy organization, or they aren't real in the first place, there is no harm in writing about them because ... well, they aren't real and cannot harm anyone.

However, if you are a shadowy organization, you want to prevent others from writing about you (or other shadow organization) as you want to remain shadowy.
