So I had a particularly bad experience on RoyalRoad, simply from trying to post my first story there. I'm thinking about coming over to ScribbleHub instead, as a result....and without trashing RR too much, I just wanted to see if anyone else has had an experience like mine?

Essentially my submission kept getting these vague rejections like "We allow sexual content on this site, but it can't be the focus of the story blah blah blah, we are worried your submission may be too suggestive blah blah blah" and I was really flabbergasted. Because keep in mind, my story wasn't erotica or smut or anything like that. It was a genderbender/mecha title...kind of like Evangelion or Gundam Wing. But it wasn't fanfic...it was an original universe. And the first chapter obviously has zero sexual content.

And it even included this disclaimer in the synopsis:

"There is romance. It may have some of the elements of a harem, though that is not the primary element of it, and its definitely not the type you typically see in anime. I also marked it for having possible sexual content, though I haven't planned any as of yet. It may be included in specially marked chapters later on if I feel it fits."

So a moderaror kept rejecting it with these vague messages, despite that disclaimer being there from the start. So I removed the sexual content tags entirely, and sent in an angry support ticket like "I just wont include it at all then. Fine. Its a Gundam style story anyways so its not that important to the plot! So stop rejecting it. Jeez. Right?

Then it gets rejected AGAIN. This time he wants me to change the cover because he says it's 'incredibly sexual.' And demands that I change the cover art...which I paid money for. So now I'm really upset by this point and was just like...what is their malfunction?

The cover art was pretty modest. It was just a curvy girl in a kind of body hugging space suit. Like the kind you see the females wear in some sci-fi/mecha (non-ecchi mind you) anime/manga. She IS thick. Maybe a tad overweight (but notnquite chubby). But fully covered from head to toe. No skin showing below the neck. No transparent sections either, in the suit itself. And her pose was a neutral standing pose...not anything suggestive.

So I'm super mad. I flat out refused. Now I'm waiting for one of the site owners over there to review the case (since I asked for an escalation above that mod). But he said she is "stricter" than him. Which is even weirder. So whatever, we'll see I guess.

But listen guys, am I the crazy one here? lol.
I just feel like they are straight up banning any images of women who's bodily dimensions exceed some vague skinny parameter. Like she must be in violation of RR's rules, subsection Double-D or something. (lol!)

I mean she was sexy...but that was it. It wasn't to a crazy level.

For reference here is my 'incredibly sexual' cover art:

The only issue that I have had on Scribblehub is in regards to the book covers being too sexual (which I believe is an advertising issue) even ones that are fine on amazon don't fly here. Everything else has been great though.

I am waaay too raunchy for RR and even my tamest work wouldn’t work there.

Yes, well I'm actually a sis, not a bruh. But what I was arguing in my support ticket was that they are banning depictions of women who have certain body types. Which is both bizarre, and really offensive.

Like no offense RR, but not every *real* woman is a waif, a barbie, a whale or a stud with a nose ring. Now admittedly, if my cover girl was a bit more realistic, she'd probably have more of a gut, a bit more flab, and her waist wouldn't be that small. But hey, I can idealize her a little, right?

Needless to say, I was very unhappy. I even told John that he's projecting himself a bit too much with that comment in the support ticket. :ROFLMAO:

Even if you publish it on RR, you will get comments that complain about romance. I have the romance tag on, I added clearly to the synopsis what the story is about, still get reviews and comments that say it is bad because there is romance.

You will only enjoy RR only if you are doing a murderhobo LitRPG.

So there are still murderhobo LitRPGs out there?

Because I swear that all those works just rot as soon as they reach the threshold and next thing the MCs are fighting will be their feelings.

RR authors, I am not your psychiatrist.

Well, and they also have lots of covers with male characters on them, who are ripped and have very masculine builds. And a lot of those boyz are shirtless, Conan style.

I was like...why do they get a free pass? Why are the shirtless body builders with the giant axes on their backs not labeled as Sexual Covers? Why is it only the idealized female characters that are getting the rejections? It's really awful.

As for the murderhobo thing, that is 100% true. And they have paid ads all over their site, depicting extremely violent scenes. Like...stick figures that are disemboweled, missing limbs, limbs strewn all over the ground, blood and gore and mutilation; stuff like that. How is that okay but a image of a female with big boobs is not? It's so stupid.

Like this right here up above in the link. Why is this not considered a SEXUAL cover? They only target females with this nonsense. Not to mention, at least my girl is wearing a shirt. :ROFLMAO::cautious:

If my cover character had been a big handsome musclebound man with a giant axe strapped across his back, and no shirt on, it wouldn't have gotten rejected. That's so dumb.

You know, there are reasons why I stopped visiting RRL and number one is the stupid, stupid, stupid ads.

I clicked your link above and I can't stomach any of the formats.

Ok, since if I start talking things would escalate quickly, I will save you the argument arc and directly jump to the tldr version:

[A very serious argument that explains the rules and guidelines of RR, the matter of sponsorship, the age range of general audience, the percentage of sexual content, and some common sense on why the story and its cover got rejected]

...So as I said, based on the above reasons, your story wasn't suitable for the Royal Road's audience as it was.

Every time this topic comes up, I like to regale a story that I wrote for this year's Writathon and got rejected for 'sexual content'! I encourage OP to give this a read and have a good laugh! You don't have to feel too bad for yourself, the site will get progressively worse over time if they only favor paying members!

Now that I finished reading this thread I can add something. This cover doesn't target female audience at all. Just look at random cover for BL novel or Manga.

Other than that, I'm sorry it happened to you. :blob_pat_sad:

I foresee a lot of cats picture in near future.

If only the Royal Road had this level of moral integrity when it came to charging 8-years olds money, but not, apparently, they have very flexible morals out there in Narnia.

But apparently, there is no moral conflict. Out there in Narnia, not only the children out there could somehow objectively rate the story on the scale on 1 to 10, they could also perform monetary transactions and sign off legal documents. Only thing they need to be protected from is knowledge that other genders exist. Narnia is such a progressive country.

That's funny? Because the mods are most likely Israeli than Californian.
