Hi! :blob_cookie:

I tried to learn to draw with a sketchbook, but the problem is I had to hide what I drew. (I live in Bulgaria, and let us just say that BL here is a no-no. Much to my shame. Seeing as, it should be none of anyone's business.)

My question is: should I try with a digital tablet? I have saved up some money and can buy something basic to get the hand of it. Should I try? I enjoyed drawing while I did it, but the whole pen and paper thing does not work for me. I saw that there are these super basic and cheap tablets. Like this one:

https://www.ozone.bg/product/tablet-za-risuvane-diva-writing-tablet-8-5/ (Sorry it is in Bulgarian, but this site is a Bulgarian one and I shop from it when I need something.)

It can save me money on paper and art supplies. I'll be able to save my pictures and post them on DA too. Hopefully, the saved file will be of a better quality than a picture made with a phone.

Do you think that I should give it a shot? It is just 14 lev, which is like 5-6 $. (And, to be honest, I can barely draw a head, so I don't think I am ready for anything fancier.)

Thank you for the advice in advance! =)

Dora!! It's great to see you again!

If you're looking for a place to practice digital drawing, You might have a better time with a well-known brand such as Wacom or Huion. The tablet you have linked isn't really a typical digital tablet and cannot connect to your computer, it's a standalone device similar to etch-and-sketch. It might be a good way to practice drawing though! Just note that you likely won't be able to save your artwork.

If you do decide to hop in to drawing, here are some tips (take them with a grain of salt, I'm still an amateur):
-Use references
-Don't be afraid to trace while you're learning (just don't post stuff publicly). It's a good way to get the hang of how lines flow and shapes form.
-Try to draw whatever it is you want to the best of your abilities, then take a look at the finished piece and take note of the mistakes. Remake the same piece of illustration while keeping the mistakes in mind.

Good luck!!

I say buy it if you have the money to spare. I can't afford that so I mainly draw using my fingers and phone ?. But either way, as an artist, everything can be your tool.

Thanks! It has an app that can save the picture, but I am not sure how.

Doesn't paper get expensive? A sketchbook here costs 10 lev and has just 80 pages. This tablet has space for 100k sketches and costs 14 lev. The battery will give out the ghost in an year, but that is still a lot of saved up money.

From what you are saying, I'd go for the tablet. Although with a cheap tablet you may not be able to have as much freedom as you would with something more expensive... like paper (lol). With a pencil, or pen, or marker, or anything else, you will have a lot more control over line thickness and tool use versatility. For example, when coloring as a kid, have you ever just turned the crayon on its side and filled in the page faster like that? You can't do that with the tablet you linked. You can use an expensive tablet (via brushes) or paper. However, the tablet still has much to offer. It can help you with line work, and sometimes limiting your tool set can help you grow as an artist. Not to mention the quick erase button, which can help you hide your more "colorful" drawings. I'd say get it, but don't neglect your paper skills.

Also, you can still practice drawing in public. I personally sculpt more than I draw, and in both cases, the ability to make perfect basic shapes is invaluable.

Oh, it's Dora. Welcome back. You should start off with simpler images, like one man, or two men talking in a totally straight manly way. Nobody's gonna give you any bad business over it. Then you can consider buying a tablet. Drawing on a tablet is harder than drawing with a pencil.
Though it's your own business.

I was thinking of starting out with references and chibis. No one recognizes the BL in chibis if they don't know a thing about BL. XD

My brother, or sister, you can learn to draw using paper, but don’t get spicy. Learn the basics on it an don’t jump to full pieces.

I should have a playlist of what I learnt from, I use the ball-bag technique. I can send them.

(I was bad till I got over, I want a quick and easy and universal thing. Still bad but my mentality has shifted and I can actually focus and learn why.)

Tablet is good idea, doesn’t have to be fancy, can use an iPad like me, or even a phone if you have a large screen.

If you want to hide your bl I can see it helping, if you want to draw two men ‘interacting‘ you can put them on different layers, and hide it separately until you‘re ready to complete the image.

Seconding iPad! before I got a more expensive desktop tablet, I drew primarily on a refurbished iPad using Procreate and it worked really well! I honestly miss Procreate on my desktop, ha ha - it's just a very intuitive drawing program compared to others I've tried. It's not free, but it's low cost and a one-time buy for a pretty robust program, so I recommend the program as well.
