No, they want you to talk about your hobbies and pretend interest to convince you to open up.

Reading through the novel requires a lot of effort and time. They don't have the time, and they don't want to make an effort.

In reality, it's the other way around.

If you are a famous criminally insane patient in the nuthouse, it is more likely someone would read your work to build their career of analyzing you.

His interpretation of all the heroes were "So, this represents you," the villains were all "This represents your parents," and all the bad things that happen to the hero were "And this represents when your parents [weirdly super specific event that never actually happened]." I never realized how much he hated my parents before then. We weren't friends for very long after that...

Sounds like he was trained in Freudian psychology. That school of thinking says everything is a result of repressed childhood trauma. A common outcome of that kind of treatment is the patient coming out with a hatred of their parents.
