Which era do you think is more dangerous to live in for an ordinary everyday person?.
Oh, every era is dangerous in its own way. Plagues in the past, tech surveillance today.

But in the writer’s world? Even the poorest, most hopeless characters get a happy ending they’d never dream of in reality. Medieval life? Death by disease or sword. Modern life? Death by taxes and bad Wi-Fi.

Everyday life, probably Medieval.

But there are far more individual ways to die nowadays than back then by virtue of technology.

So to me, the accuracy of an answer to this question depends on the context.
You could die immediately due to diarrhea.
Is dysentery still a common disease or has it all but vanished like the Bubonic Plague?

Medieval peasant: live a slogging horrible life clueless and die in agony of poor healthcare

Modern peasant: live a slogging horrible life hyperfixated to social media and die in agony of expensive healthcare.
Seems both are dangerous,no escaping.

Modern. You get average idiots dying from the most basic things while knowing not to do them.

Medieval is where you just live life and be basic to live for a hundred years.

Now that I think about it, all "well achkchually" guys blocked you... Well, J-minus asked for a block function and didn't block you... Ok, now I'm confused. :blob_dizzy:
Well actually I didn't block Corty and appreciate his existence that I'm aware of.

You are not one of "well achkchually" guys.
Well actually, anyone can be one as long as they desire, they have the freedom of speech, it's their right to express themselves, what you're implying with that statement can even be interpreted as racism, it implies that Voidiris's species doesn't have the right to express themselves, with that statement, you showed a lack of respect for the freedom and individuality of an entire species.

I was aiming for sexism... Eh, close enough.

Medieval is barbaric, period.
Barbaric with a very thin veil of pretense.
I think people like to demonize the modern era and that's why people still thought it was more dangerous to live in this era than the medieval one... Probably, it was because medieval was history already and didn't seem that big of a deal considering it was no longer relevant to us.

I was waiting for someone to say " medieval times, you only had a 50/50 chance of living past 30!" so I could "well actually, that's because the infant mortality rate was absolutely horrid. If you lived to be five, you actually had a decent chance of making it to 50."

On the other hand, a hangnail could kill you if it got infected.

In early 14th century life expectancy in Europe was about 25 years. Sure it was partially thanks to the black death, however the plague was very much part of the medieval life. Before the plague in the 10th century the average life expectancy was around 30-35 years. 56% of women and 40% of men died before age of 40 and only 6% of men reached the age of 60. 30% of children died before age of 5.

Homicide rate (for 100 000 people) in the 14th century was Regensburg 25, Oxford 90-120, Florenz 152, Krakau 62, Basel 25, Antwerpen 23
By comparison in 2023 South Africa 45, Mexico 26, Jamaica 53, Haiti 40, Columbia 25. (Most of the developed world today is 2 or under)
Note that contemporary people thought the crime rate in Oxford and Florenz was outrageously high by the standards of the time.
