Hello fellow readers, one of the stories I've been enjoying just gave me two signs that makes me worry it will soon be abandoned. What are some clues red flags that make you worry that your story is about to be abandoned or the author will soon disappear?

When the plot is getting wonky.

Like, all of a sudden power boost, dropped side plotlines, characters performing out of character as though to rush out development.

The consistent release becomes abrupt. The feared " author takes a break" chapter.

What are the two signs that you got?

Some authors disappear and come back like my great self.

Slower and slower releases until:
A. Hiatus announcement
B. Just one day ghosts

Author complaining about getting scraped. Usually leads to moving to webnovel. And I don't move sites to chase authors, so it may as well be dead.

Author already having two or more stories and declares they're starting another story. They sometimes even say they won't abandon older works, but they do.

Their writing history. Usually people don't remember the author's name on stories. If they do its not for good reasons. One such author for myself had multiple good ideas for stories but they never got past the 15 chapter mark. If the author has a number of stories listed in his fiction section, look to see how far they get in them to get an idea. If they have a couple of stories and never finished a single one, most likely they won't for the story you are reading.

Let me just mark this thread. This proves my talking point about author's reputation.
I remember a notorious CN author who enjoys write epic stories but never end them, ie hiatus all of a sudden.

Then he also likes to change pen name like how one uses tissue.

The Multiname Eunuch King.

To me, an author who gets into an argument with a reader of theirs in the comment section because of something the commenter said....is a major red flag.

Even worse, are the ones who make those passive-aggressive posts in forums where they don't say the name of the reader whose comment upset them, but they heavily hint at it enough to the point that anyone who witnessed the discussion/argument, knows exactly who and what is being referenced. I avoid those authors like the plague. They aren't mature enough to be engaged with.

If you can't handle criticism, even the kind you THINK is trolling, even if writing is just a hobby for you....than you shouldn't be posting your work publicly.

To me, its like when people wear something that is obviously "eye-catching" in public, and then someone else makes a remark in public that you are offended by. You don't get to police what people can and can't say. You CHOSE to do something that grabs attention, so you have to accept the consequences of garnering said attention whether you like it or not. You don't get to have it both ways. You aren't special.

Same for writers, you chose to post something in a public space, so you WILL get both the good and bad of this exercise. Suck it up, or stop posting/engaging.

The main issue is with me is I delete my works whenever the going gets tough, hence I suffer from that negative reputation even though I already changed that aspect of mine. An issue I can't recover from, it seems.

So yeah, your behavior as author matters to potential readers.

Edit: kinda like Im Dal Young. I don't like his spineless MCs, so I avoid his work even though he draws attractive ladies.

Asking for money and talking about your ailing family. Whilst, it may be true, I have noticed it enough from certain authors that it reads of falsehoods in my mind.
(Note: this is not having/advertising a patron or Discord or Kofee; I am talking about blatant "give me money" I need it due to my second cousins thrice removed fathers aunt needs a kidney from me in authors notes.)
Or the 5-20 chapters of a story and nothing else except a patron link to read the rest.

Authors who's MCs are not allowed to succeed for "Drama" reasons every time they get anywhere with anything, until they are put through a ringer that would make me say "Ok, that is just dumb and the author is only doing it for the sake of trying to be dramatic, not for actual plot reasons". Once in awhile ok, but every single arc, nah I am good.

The author being not social/have any socials disabled
They have an inconsistent upload schedule
If it's just one, then it could be shrugged off as paranoia, but if it's both, half of the time it's an inevitable axe.

I got the minor red flag of the author starting a fourth story (he now has 4 ongoing stories he's writing at once) and the major red flag of "next chapter will be delayed due to writer's block."

Artists need to cut, edit, and iterate to reach higher standards. Published writers often draft many iterations before they find success.

Unfortunately shitting half baked stories is part of the process of improvement, that's why you gotta stick to proven authors or those who have no standards about their work lol

It's not really a red flag, but for romance novels and comics it usually often starts getting boring after the couple is... well... a couple... when it starts feeling like the story is just kept "alive" to make more money and there is nothing really happening anymore apart from some mild relationship drama, I am usually going to loose interest pretty soon and stop reading.

On a different site I once had an author praise one of my comment and give it reputation, while calling another one of my comments "short sighted and if you can do better then right your own story." I have never before been given reputation and blocked by the same person within one day.

Some authors can only take praise and delete all criticism. If you ever wonder about that look at the total comment number on top of the comment sections and then how many actually show. Some authors you can tell just delete any comment that is negative.
