Writing Who's that side character(s) that you naturally gel with that you give them more relevance

I think it's fair to say many writers have that character that's either a side or background character that they gave way more screen/pagetime to than initially expected.

It can kinda happen when you design a character that maybe just naturally compliment the plot or they're the only character who can fill the role other characters in the story won't dare to do personallity-wise (Too combatative, willing to do the dirty works, etc.)

Or maybe they're a character you unexpectedly like writing for for whatever reason, there's plenty of reason to go around.

My example would've been with a few characters in the same setting/storyline actually.
It started with a character called Gina in Re:Maou Isekai Fantasy, who appeared in Book 3 Chapter 56 (Aka Chapter 121)
She was the most talkative character of the ragtag group of adventurers who interact the most with the P.O.V. character, so I (planned to) give more prominence to her later on.

Then when I wrote Transmigration Breve Fantasy which is the side-story of the prequel of the example above (Mercenary of Flower), and the same exact situation actually happen again with a character called Pira, so aside from making her prominent by making her the love interest of the MC's closest friend, I also make her the daughter of the two pretty important side characters (Both (Pira and Pixi) of them shared orange hair already so it was easy to implement) as well as a pupil of the main character of the main story.

Then I realized I wrote multiple characters with the similiar characteristics and increasing their relevancy, so I just went fuck it and make them all related as to make the stories feel more interconnected (and excuse as to why a few characters feel similar to each other) when I actually go back and write the first story again (Probably after a lot of rewrite)

Second example would've Kenni Krale from my recent novel Easy Mode LIVE since she's the most combatitive and bold character so far that kinda easy to create conflicts and back-and-forth talk with the main characters. So I'm probably gonna use her a lot more than other of MC's classmates.

So yeah you guys got any characters like that? Not intended on being that big a deal in the plot but just couldn't help but expand their story or prominence in the plot. Time to shill those characters (and novels) of yours.
Maybe tell each other how well making them more relevant than their initial scope goes.

Elizabeth "Liz" Blandford, RN in "Between Worlds" was just meant to be a recurring "joke" - a character the others see in passing, who does not share their hobby nor their destiny, and who kind of weaves in and out of the ongoing tale without being a real part of it, but she just would not let that status stand.

Harry Pierce in "Strange Awakening" - really hate what happens to that guy because he was both painful and fun to write at the same time.

Rock Lee from Naruto, I know it sounds like a basic answer, but a reason many put the fight between him and Gaara is because of the beauty that is hardwork to overcome talent. Until they massacred my boy.

There is this series called "From", a horror mystery thriller, in there is a character named Father Khatri who is a pastor with an unknown past, sadly for plot purposes he is killed, but returns as what some theorise as either the hallucination of one of the protagonists Boyd or an envoy of the entity that has the characters trapped in place to mess with Boyds will.

Regardless he served as a connection between the supernatural and natural aspects as a pastor believing in the supernatrual to have reason and be proven right before death.

I've made a habit of not getting too attached to most of my characters. I wrote a short story a while ago (it's not posted anywhere), and I got attached to the love interest's brother. I killed him protecting her, however, and that had me wrecked for a week. It was perfectly done, so I couldn't rewrite it, but it hurt to kill my precious baby boy.

That said, I liked Leera in Lay the Dragon, though she was just a plot device to give the MC a reason to free the elves from their demon enslavement. In A Succubus' Love, I really enjoyed writing Reaver, the MC's sword's personality. He's a massive smart ass.

Lividia, a young black dragon in my first story who can transform into a human form (natch), was intended to be just one of many girls that the MC meets in his travels. I decided that she would be narcissistic and arrogant to the point of blatantly ignoring reality whenever it ran counter to her assumptions. She was so much fun to write and so popular among my readers that she basically became the primary romantic interest. I jokingly called her the democratically elected bestgirl because the first time I ran a popularity poll of favorite characters, literally no one failed to vote for her.

It was an isekai power fantasy harem story and the first story I ever posted, so quality of writing on the average girl in the harem was not sky high in the first place, but she was intended to basically be a joke/useful ally. Instead she ended up on the cover.

Irma was a throw away character I wrote for a bit where a girl has eggs fall out of her skirt in the girls bathroom. Even by the end of the chapter I knew she was going to become my favorite to write. And then I needlessly shoved her into a strong side role. Shine on you crazy Diamond!
The goblin I had my party fight in the first session. They made him into a mayor.
