100k words max? Are they insane? You can't even write a restaurant menu with that.

Fun fact, a first time author would get rejected if they can't submit a manuscript within the word count limit by a traditional publisher.

Could probably just say the first arc is a book.

I'm not sure how you arrived at 2 months, but you might wanna check that again.

Will I retain the rights to my submissions?​

You retain all rights to your submissions, with two exceptions: 1. For your work to be passed through the second round, you must agree for J-Novel Club to be able to stream for free at most 30% of your work as a preview and as part of our reader feedback portion of the judging. 2. If your submission is selected for one of the prizes, in order to receive the prize money, you will need to sign an exclusive publishing contact with J-Novel Club for the work. However that contract will have a limited term of 5 years, which can only be renewed upon agreement of both parties.​

How does the prize money work?​

The prize money will be considered an advance on royalties paid upon signing of a publishing contract with J-Novel Club, and will be paid out in full upon signing of the contract (minus any required taxes, depending on country of residence).​

If a work is selected for a prize, the author has to sign an exclusive publishing contract for five years to receive any money. That basically means there's no prizes, just an opportunity to sign a contract. I don't have much experience with that sort of thing, but this looks to me like it's blatantly misleading at best, maybe even exploitative depending on the terms of the contract.

I've previously self-published my story, can I submit it?​

If you published your story in a way where it was sold for money to a general audience, that it is not eligible for this contest. If you published it on a website or personal blog which was not monetized, than you can submit it.​

From people I know who participated in them, sounds very similar to the agreements to take part in "reality" talent competitions, only a little more honest about it.

And the 2023 contest will be judged this year (the finalists were identified in 2023 apparently, but the winner is announced at a convention this month) from what I read.

Sorry to revive this post, but I saw this contest. While looking at the eligibility part of the contest, it's only written that the "Complete Story" category was limited to 100,000 words, while the ongoing doesn't have this limit specifically written.

Is it just me who misread it? Or does it not have a set limit for the ongoing story? Still, it's specified that the story will be judged on around 60,000 words.

I participated last year (Mad World and The Burning Desire to Save) and will do so again this year (The Burning Desire to Save and The Hauntings That Follow Us).

I'd recommend keeping your ongoing story entry to 60,000 words or less.

Yeah they changed it to allow ongoing series, just submit part of it.

Yes, it's just the part about the limit words number that I'm not sure. Can ongoing story put their whole story, but will only be judged for about 60k words?

I bet if someone proves they can't follow instructions and keep the doc below 60k word it will not make it past the first round.
