And oftentimes, the in-laws are often adversaries for MC.

That trope...It's always baffling how there never seem to be any functioning laws. You would believe there are no normal families in CN works; ever.

I've also seen the opposite. The in-laws treasure their daughter/son-in-law and play matchmaker. Of course, the adversary's role has to be taken by the family instead.

Also I initially had the question is when I read a CN and thought "hmm, a shitty father-in-law who sold his even more talented daughter to a sexual predator? Now why is it so familiar?"

Turns out, I had been reading the same author for quite awhile. I mean, venting his RL frustration might be real but saying shits like the father-in-law is jealous of the daughter and ended up wanting to destroy her via familial/ parental obligation is a bit ehh~

Well, I'm not married, but my girlfriend's mom makes me call her mother, wonderful woman. My girlfriend explains it like this (she's Korean btw) in Asia there is a massive focus on being filial or respecting your parents. Now, normally the Girls marry into their husband's family, literally becoming that family, and is expected to care for her husband's parents first. Conversely, should a man marry into the woman's family, barring he's not an orphan, he's usually looked down upon. East Asia also puts emphasis on Blood lines, which are usually inherited via Paternal origin. As an aside, only one culture (as far as I know so feel free to fact check) has bloodlines being Maternal in nature, and that Jewish.
