Something at least I feel should be brought up when talking about bathos is how you can do the reverse of it. Chainsaw man does that occasionally. Taking something that seems like it should be humorous and making it extremely serious. It ends up creating an extremely unsettling horror.

I think in Chainsaw man there is already a suspension of disbelief in it, plus it does have a serious tone but with stupid characters. There is also no actual self-awareness in those characters. The thing about a lot or movies these days is the main protagonists are "self-aware" and yet they want us to take the rest of the show seriously.

I was watching the new Ghost Busters movie, frozen empire, and when the guy is jokingly talking about the ghost buster song I realized that the show itself was somewhat illogically stupid and unenjoyable. It's had to explain, but a lot of Marvel movies are that way and those movies suck. It's kind of the non-4th wall breaking self-awareness people think is stupid.

I find a lot of 'woke' games do the same thing.

I think this guy does a much better job of explaining the entropy of story telling.
