Have fun and write what you want. Just because one person doesn't like the genre/theme/plot etc doesn't mean you shouldn't. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but also be open to criticism. If someone tells you don't do 'x' genre because of 'y' and 'z' (usually their own biases), that's not criticism period.
But hearing 'you need to space 'x' out a little to make it more eligible, or this came unexpectedly' is definitely valid criticism.
The more fun you have and more you write something you like, the more invested you'll be, and the easier it'll be to write.
Take inspiration from other media as well. Authors run on inspiration and motivation, so reading, watching, etc can help you out tremendously. Someone in these forums made a lovely metaphor of how Authors are inkwells that run on inspiration.
Another big thing is to make note of significant events. Even the bare minimum of A = MC starts in the world to B = Becomes stronger is enough. It's kind of a like a framework or a container. You fill up what's in between, and that ends up becoming the journey/story from A to B.
You can also compare your work to others to see if you're on the right track, or ask around to see if people can give you feedback. The forums here are usually quite helpful.
