I've seen the best results when the developer decided to forget that it's a program for making role-playing games and focus on making something else or visual novels. Paradoxically, RPG Maker is better for making VNs than VN Maker. In some cases, I've seen the program's limitations encourage creativity. The most famous example is Yume Nikki.
Honestly, it's cool for making VNs with RPG mechanics. Though, for pure VNs, why not Ren'py?
Hard to find a more inspiring author. He and Howard are among my favorites.
Despite Sir Lovecraft's fears, I find his stories strangely uplifting... when I first read Call of Cthulhu I didn't think of "horrors beyond our comprehension", but "look at the great and terrific things that the human mind can imagine." , Through the Gates of Silver Key is the perfect example of that.
