I know @CupcakeNinja has a lot to say about it

Mostly bad and dead or irrelevant. In one story there's an amazing mom but also not particularly important. In another there is time travel so they are first dead then irrelevant but foster father figure is awesome. In my most popular story the foster mother-like figure is a yandere but somehow I got carried away and made her a normal love interest instead of making it creepy. Which I find shameful, I had to have had guts and made it creepy and uncomfortable! Oh well.
dead parents specifically is such a lazy basic bitch way to write it these days imo. I enjoy drama, so my MCs have two parents. They are often either abusive or they are really fucked in some other way. In one story, father is pretty normal but the mom is totally fucking insane and only barely listens to the dad because despite everything she does care for him. In others, the dad is a dick and the mom regularly drugs her son so she can sneak into his room and fuck him. My MCs often range from casually psychotic just by nature or entirely held together by resent and spite with a dash or self loathing at the things they've done in efforts to escape such situations. Cuz drama ✨

I just really enjoy MCS with SOME kind of chip on their shoulder and the best way to do that comes from a fucked family situation because its just such a tragic thing for your own family, who should cherish and love you the most, end up being the people who outright fuck you up the most. It has to impact how you interact with everyone else around you, how you view your own self

Back in the day, absent parents were used just as a way to make it more convenient for the MC to have hot babes over or seem more mature by being "independent" but thats a trope thats gone too far. Authors should have the balls to tackle family drama and connections. How often are Isekai MCs all, "i dont really have any attachments to my past world" for that matter? Its fine if they had shit parents they resent which shaped who they are in the story itself. It makes sense for them to not think of such parents often, in that case. But to kill them off? And avoid any mention of them going forward ? Like, no. Thats bullshit. I want my MCs to experience actual anguish over never seeing anyone or anything familiar to them. If they had good parents and siblings whom they loved, even more reason to keep this in mind. Sprinkle in some memories of the MC's time together with his family. Make them FEEL their loss, yearn for their presence. And lament the reality of being torn away from them.

Dont just fucking ignore past bonds.

I've been noticing this trend a lot lately. Bad abusive parents or they're dead. Even in my novel, my mc's father is the worst person in the world. So I was wondering what kind of parents your mc has? Is there an objective reason for this?
Normal people with normal parental struggles in life. Nothing dramatic.

Doesn't hurt my story for them to be the generic-average-family-people-with-their-common-yet-ubique-silent-struggles-in life type of parents, because for most of my story, they won't be involved.
