Discord Tips

I'm thinking about finally opening a Discord channel. Since I'm currently on a posting hiatus, it just seems to make more sense to have a place where people can ask me questions and where I can provide updates without creating an update chapter. There's always some level of anxiety when interacting with the readers, especially since people can be unpredictable. If I were to go through with this, I would love to hear y'alls experience and any tips you learned or oversights you made creating your own Discord server.

So far, I have:

1. MEE6 as a bot for basic functions and admin
2. A Welcome Channel, where people can read the rules and must use a confirm emote before accessing the rest of the server
3. A dedicated read-only update channel
4. A general channel
5. A channel for each story
6. A channel for edit suggestion
7. A dedicated NSFW channel
8. Dedicated voice channels
9. Private categories for editors and admins if I ever decide I need them
10. Read-only reference category for pictures of characters

All the channels except the editing suggestion one are set to 5-second slow mode timers, which I think is just long enough to mitigate the worst spammer but short enough to still allow uninterrupted organic conversations. The edit suggestions channel is set to 10 minutes, so people make an effort to write all the things they find concisely in one post. I don't expect too many people to join, so I'm guessing these parameters are sufficient to keep the place somewhat orderly.

Any advice/experiences are welcome, and thanks ahead of time.

@SPS4 Personally, I wouldn't do a 5-second timer unless spamming becomes an issue, but that's just me.
Also definitely make a rules channel!

It can be as simple and straightforwards or specific as you like, but it is way easier as an uncertain moderator to go "hey stop violating this rule I have right here" then "I think you're kinda being a dick, stop it".

Hmm. You do need a moderation bot, preferably two due to maintenance, as well as various log channels (bot). I recommend Dyno (basic moderating) and Carl (embedding), both of which include auto mod feature and their own website, so they are quite user friendly.

A roleplay bot; I like owo.

A decent leveling bot. Arcane is a good choice to me.

MEE6 can do some of those things, however it is extremely limited in my opinion.



Aside from these, you may need extra log channels (human). A jail log channel for keeping track of who mods have muted and how long they have been punished. Change log channel to log any server changes. A bot testing area, or could be a separate server completely. They make things easier for the moderators and administrators.

A ticket bot for opening tickets, allowing members to contact moderators privately or for more serious problems. They are the essantials for me to run a properly maintained server. To be honest, I haven't been keeping up with discord updates, so some of them may be unnecessary.

I might start off with no timer then and only add it in if I feel it's necessary.

It's been a while since I last created a discord server, and I thought MEE6 was still the way to go. After doing some more research, that's clearly not true anymore. Hell, I can't even use moderation without a subscription.

No Text to Speech has made a bunch of videos and there’s even a website dedicated to alternatives, https://www.alternativestomee6.com/.

Anyways, here are my bot recommendations:

1. Wick — Admin stuff + logs + antiraid + automod + antinuke + verification.
   
   I’ve used Wick and while it’s a bit complex to set up, it’s very good at what it does. Also, people generally hate slow mode. (or, at least me personally.) Wick has antiraid and automod for spamming. Set them up and remove the slow mode. Anyone who’ll spam can be punished easily. Additionally, if you get mods or admins, and if they happen to go rogue, Wick takes care of them.
   
   
2. Arcane — Levels.
   
   Literally just Mee6 levels but better. There are other leveling bots out there if you don’t like Arcane. It does some other stuff, but I’ve only used it for levels.
   
   
3. Ticket Tool — Tickets
   
   You likely won’t need tickets, but in the case you do, this bot is great for it. If you do though, add it to the channel create/delete whitelist if you have Wick.

2. Don’t have too many channels. Use categories to break things up, and if you have extra categories, hide them behind self assignable roles.
3. Use Discord’s onboarding if you can. It’s quite nice.
4. Discord’s automod is pretty good too. Don’t overlook it.
5. Organize your roles well. By that, I mean placement and if they stand out on the side bar. Not all things need to stand out.
6. Turn on community in your server if it isn’t on. A bunch of features are locked behind it.
7. Have a consistent naming scheme.

Yeah, I've just watched his video before my post got approved and MEE6 was the first to go. Just finally got done getting Dyno set up for everything MEE6 was doing.

I was careful to not give anyone manage server/admin, as even the admins (if I ever do get them) seem to be able to do their job without it.

Next is working in a ticket system. Even if I don't "need" it, I still think it's nice to have an avenue for reports that's not just DM'ing the admins.
