Should I delete my story and then repost it with short chapters?

Basically, I am going to cut the chapters in half and repost them. Would I need to delete my story? That would mean more chapters, but still trying to upload chapters twice a month.

You do not have to delete it if you don't want. You can delete the chapters, and then reupload them.

You can edit your chapters until reaching your last in number and then add new chapters. Before doing it, announce it to your readers, so that they know the change will appear and which chapter they have to go to continue the story. You can also add quote in the beginning of each chapters you will edit to said something like this chapter is part of the previous chapter (Number) and so on on each of them.

I quickly take a look at your story. Depending on how much you cut your chapter, you will have to go from 21 to 50 or even 100 if you go to 1k words per chapter.

Or be a risk taker and go 500 per chapter?

I don't understand, are short chapters better? My chapters are 4k average, with the big ones reaching 10k+ because I write until I feel the story for that chapter is complete. Should I be making shorter chapters or is it just down to preference? I've noticed short stuff, like 1k words max, does really well on here, but I wouldn't want to cut my creativity just for that.

I think that is mostly due to the nature of the web novel genre (Is it a genre???) that tends to do very well with being short, thus faster to read between breaks or downtime, like commune or between-period. Longer chapter tend to take more time, and investment to complete, which most of SH demo don't really look for. I prefer to sit down and read anything that is 5-7k+, which only happens at either the end of my day or off day.

I do see a few authors break down their longer chapters into smaller parts so that they will do better here. Shorter chapters acted as a natural stopping point, so it is easier to pick back up the next reading session

Most readers like chapter between 1/2k words, and I don't know how you related that to cut your creativity, look at the chapter you write and you will find some part when you could "break it" to make two chapters.

500 is short and useless, what do you want to complete with that, Updating 8 chapters in a days when you write one (in your previous number of word) chapter to have more visibility ?

Reading anything more than 3000 for me is very tedious.
So I think between 1000-2000 is optimal.

Is it that necessary to shorten your chapters? Because I end my chapters whenever I see the perfect time to end it with a decent cliffhanger, not some insane cliffhangers.

I see such a method as cutting creativity because you're automatically limiting the story you want to tell in ONE chapter to 1-2k words, which isn't to say it can't be done, but it just feels like a destructive limitation. I write until the story of the chapter is complete- Like if you were watching an episode of your favorite show. Would you want it to randomly end smack dab in the middle because "oh, run-time limit has been reached, tune in next week!"

I also feel like a lot of writers on here misuse it in place of actual cliffhangers. Like, ending in the middle of dialogue because you simply slashed your DOC in half is NOT a cliffhanger.

I suppose if the demo likes it then it is certainly a smart tactic. But, yeah, that's why I related it to cutting creativity- Just for me, though. Definitely not a universal issue.

It depend where you cut it. You can write your chapter how you want and then try to find good place to cut IF you want to make shorter chapters. Most web novel are serial and published through time, you won't have the whole volume instantly when you read this type of story. On another note if you read a volume/book or a light novel who are often made into volume, then yes you have your full story in one go.

I have beginning chapters that hit 20k words. Others in the 10ks.

No. You don't have to chop your chapters. Either your readers are into it, or they aren't. That's on them, not you. Do what you like and your fan base will come.

Edit: To add, I asked my fan base recently if they liked the long chapters (5k-9k) and those who responded said they preferred them over the short ones (3k-5k) that I had been putting out those last few days. So I went back to the bigger chapters.

Set your expectations and your "author normal", and readers who enjoy that kind of thing will be the ones who like and follow your releases.

I released 8k word chapters for one of my novels that is now on hiatus. I don't think many readers liked the length.
