Writers, Readers, and Authors, what are some of the best elements and aspects of the books you are reading or working on? What sets the project apart from the sea of other books floating around, aside from mere plot?

I will answer my own question too; could be fun.

Overlap's best aspect is its connection to general society and self-awareness set through both characters. Inside and out of their constant telepathic chatter, Reed and Lumina view and judge the world around them based on what they have and how they feel, but this dynamically changes with growth as it does in many of us. They know that human nature is not as black and white as they want it to be, and that the reason behind people's words and actions are more important than the actions themselves. Their goal isn't to merge with the current reality, nor is their goal to escape their harsh reality, instead to override it with everything they learn from each other.

Reed accepts Lumina and her existence based on who she is and how she feels, even when nobody else will. Lumina seeks to be the friend Reed can find nowhere else. Their shared journey is a rarity of nature, and it shows how far people can evolve, regardless of which star system they are from, one moment at a time.

The fact I've written in Northern English characters. You barely see us Northerners in worldwide media of any kind (tv, films, games, etc) but we're always portrayed as maids or chimney sweeps and generally just as working class, thick as fuck scum in general British media. We're more often than not, looked down upon because "social class" apparently states Northerners should be doing shite manual labour and have no aspirations of being educated or having a better life.

My Northern characters are as Northern as they come, but they're not thick, poor or wastes of space. The stories I'm writing are my chance to represent.

Pain. Regret. Being wronged and tricking those who wronged you into realizing they screwed up and can never make it right so they are consumed with guilt while going out of your way to fix their mistakes so when they try to go back and fix things, redemption is forever denied them. Kids and animals being cute.

In my story Well At Least I’m a Magic Pirate Now I am trying to capture the dynamic of a player and a player character in a TTRPG. It’s an isekai into a tabletop RPG and the MC’s “cheat” is that he has a character sheet that allows him to let him go into autopilot. I’m trying to write Autopilot as kinda it’s own character with a different style of speech and internal monologue, up to and including indirectly sassing the MC occasionally.

I don’t know if it shines through, I don’t know if it makes it a good story, I don’t know if anyone else will care, but I am really enjoying it.

The prevailing of good over evil, though I stray too far into nuanced good rather than full good.

the lack of build-up and a lot of Chekhov's snipers. The will be plots that end right in the next chapter, like, if there is an asshole picking a fight with my MC, she won't hold back and beat people black and blue. At the same time, there are plots meant to resolve dozens of chapters later.

Duality and Contradiction is the main theme of my novel, so these kinds of thing are intentional.

I'm proud of my psychedelic descriptions that will make your head hurt.

I'm also proud of the way I cover themes that are rarely covered, and that I purposefully cover complex themes through out my psychological story. Lies and their uses. How lies are used to mask and help, and the harms they cause simultaneously. Masks and philosophies behind them is one of the aspects of lies I go into further depth. T
he theme of appearance, and what it means to others.
The mythological and historical undercurrent for various things.
The worldbuilding that takes in many influences, such as werewolves as an allegory for prejudice against those with AIDS, Covid-19, and prejudice against Mexican immigrants.
The interplay of various religions. My commentary, hidden in a tragic moment, on heroes and how they exist in our society, as well as the consequences they face for said heroism.

I get to geek out on language and how it can change as society shifts.
I mostly started writing the four stories I'm working on at the moment because I got tired of reading cliched heteronormative wuxia/xianxia/xuanhuan. I mean, I don't mind reading that every now and then, but it's a bit like junk food... There's only so much I can stomach.
