AI-Assisted or not.

So, my caveman brain just found out that you can actually use an AI software to have it check your writing, and, improve it.
I tried using DeepL Writing on one of my chapters, and it did come up with some more sophisticated writing than me, obviously.
The thing is, I feel like it also killed a lot of the 'personality' of my character's thought and such, because I'm using 1st PoV.
What do you guys think?
Do you use AI to assist your writing?

Not as an editor, no, but more as a general search engine that can give me something that I can latch onto for further research. It has a certain pattern that it defaults to, so using it for anything creative will give you a very generic answer at best. Although, it works great if I just need a list of generic names or something for a random NPC or something.

I might use it for minor grammar or word use tweaks, but absolutely not for entire phrases.

Especially for a first-person perspective, all of the 'quirks' in your writing are also the qualities of your character; if using AI is stripping the personality out of your character, it might not be 'your' writing anymore.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the "sophistication" of your writing. If your character isn't a poet, they aren't gonna use flowery language to describe something, anyways. Use it if you have to of course, but make sure that when you change the style of your writing that you have a clear reason for why you're changing it.

I use AI in a very limited capacity. for editing and proofreading and the like, but i never just blindly take the suggestions. I ignore anything that would kill the personality of the story, only keeping things that genuinely create issues or that just simply looks bad. I have a terrible comment of putting far too many commas in, and my eyes alone rarely catch them. Using AI certainly helps me catch any grammar issues my manual check misses.

My advice is that you don't depend too much on this type of program, you write because you like to do it so it is best to use it when you really need it. and if you use it too much at one point it will no longer be you who writes the story but it will be an AI.

I'd like to play with it in a few years when my kid gives me more free time. More importantly, when I have more mental energy during my free time.

I did consider using AI for like, three seconds.
But ultimately I decided not to.
Simply because I think my readers enjoy consuming my choppy and crude sentences more than sophisticated stuff.

AI can probably drive better the 80 millions dollars fighter better than some good pilots

But do you think its better to use them or not ? Yes and no.
As the pilot, you see it drive it better than you. Would you rely on it all the times ? Would you hate it ? would you choose to be a fervant hater of it and boycott it ? Would you keep it for emergencies ? Would you be a sygma man and simply not care bc "useful is useful anyway, a tool is only dangerous depending on the user" ?

Analogy 2 :

Anyone know that kelekinesis is op and most useful for laziness for begnin tasks. Same for teleportation. But do you know that flying with it (so to not walk) have the problem of muscles degeneration ? though most likely to get "fat" first.

Do you find yourself filling up your sentence with too many clauses? For example, a sentence like this one, right here, with a comma at the start, and it even has a conjuction, to boot!

Not going to lie, I used ChatGPT for 3 months straight. But the thing is, the chapters are better when you put in the work yourself. Read more to become more sophisticated. Edit with more than one grammar checker to catch all the mistakes. But most importantly, practice and have fun.
Happy writing!

It's important to edit it again even if the AI already edited most of the stuff, you don't know what was missing. I used ChatGPT and I was seriously pissed because the AI removed some specific action scenes.

I don’t use any AI or anything, I just type and post. I think it takes the fun out of writing and I’m worried I would be too reliant on it.

I might consider some like, meta novel where the AI writes what the System does or something like that.

but for my main works, I feel like it’s using the AI on an rpg app. If the computer can walk my character through the quests and I level up without doing anything, it’s no longer exciting or worth it to me. I want to earn the rewards and play the game for myself, even if it takes me a year to learn to double jump

occasionally. but for me the bigger issue is using commas anywhere i would put a slight pause in my verbal speech. such as between "me" and "the" towards the start of the previous sentence. almost used a comma, but i caught myself.

No. I don't think you should use AI to write for you or even to get through writer's block outside of generating prompts if you really have to. At the end of the day, improvement is gained through practice and struggle. If you're hitting a wall, it's much more satisfying to climb over it yourself instead of having something else help you over.

Even if your writing isn't something you're proud of today, you just gotta keep grinding until it is! I know my current work isn't exactly my magnum opus, but I've learned a lot just by continuing to write and hopefully, I'll be able to carry that experience to my next novel after I've finished this one.

I never use it for writing. Sometimes I do have conversations with it though just to see how it writes. You can give them personalities, and their answer will be different depending on which one you select.

Copying eldritch gods answer here because I think it's a good one.

AI is a tool it can be useful but it can't do the heavy lifting. The big things in a novel will have to be handled by yourself if you want it to be good.

I use it. ChatGPT specifically. I normally have it rewrite my chapters, as my writing can feel... rather basic to me. But it's impotent to keep in mind that you need to reeddit what the AI give you or you may lose the 'tone' you are going for.
