Hey y'all. Going to go on a little personal rant here.

Sometimes, I find it baffling to think of how long I've been writing for a single story. Every now and then I think about how much time I've spent sitting down, typing away at my weekly chapters, thinking of what I want to have happen in my story as it grows and develops, and what I've accomplished after those countless hours and weekends spent just grinding away. When I do so, I find myself almost in awe of it all. Truly. When I started, I never expected to do much with this novel of mine. I never expected to do more than maybe a few chapters here and there before inevitably getting made a fool by some commenters and zero bombed out of existence. When that didn't happen and when I got my first few followers, 5 Star ratings, and some positive feedback, I just kept going. I kept building on the world I created and kept expanding on the weird concept I came up with on a whim until it became something... almost living, in a sense. What my novel is now compared to what I planned it to be are entirely different. So much so that I wonder what my past self would think of it.

It's also sort of amazing to think of what I've done IRL in between those weekends. How much time has passed, where I've been, things I've done. What's happened with family, friends, and others. I started this novel over three years ago on a bet. A friend of mine always said my writing was pretty good, good enough to be put into a book if I ever decided to write one. Then, after we looked over some Roleplay posts and whatnot, we calculated that I'd written enough to actually publish a book or two. It was wild, those numbers. She told me if I just put an ounce of brainpower into a novel, she bet I could make something pretty fun.

Almost three years later, I hit a milestone. 600K words. A number I've only seen in other people's bank accounts who were better off than me. A number I've only seen on scoreboards in video games. I have over 400 people who regularly view my book, friends I've made because of this novel of mine, and I've even found this place that's proven to be a fun little hole to peek into. I've grown as a writer, developed my skills and wit, studied subjects I never would have without this book, and now it's become a staple in my life. I've found myself spending my weekends and free time happily tapping away on G.Docs, crafted chapters where my menace to society of an MC stumbles his way through the plot. I've cried while writing. Felt anger. Hated myself. I've spent days, torn over a fiction of a world that I myself created out of fear that I might fuck up. I've struggled during that creation process, failed and taken several L's at the hands of reviewers and commenters. I've rewritten the thing almost from scratch.

But, a year after that grind of a rewrite, I find that I did it not out of need or hate for what I wrote. No, I found that I did it out of pride. I wanted to create not a perfect novel but one that could be read over and over, one that was fun and one that made sense. One that stood out from the others because of my diversion from typical tropes and narratives. I took pride in my work because in doing so, I knew it would better the experience for my readers. And then I kept going, 0.5 star bombers be damned.

Now I'm here. 600k later and on course for 1 million words due to the scope of my project of a series. An insane number that I would never have ever thought within reach, but a number I now realize is inevitable.

TL;DR: I hit 600K words. Holy fuck. Never thought I'd get here, but here we are. My fingers and wrists hurt. Send help.

Good job!
Thanks bruh <3
Nice. I'm almost there. Though damn that's a lot of words to word onto the word site.
It really is. I would save it to a hard drive but I'm almost 100% certain I'd lose it. Plus I don't have MS Word and Libre Office's interface gives me a weird sense of anxiety that I can't scratch.

Edit: Also, I use G.Docs because I travel a lot. Having that accessibility everywhere is extremely helpful. Without it, I'd have to drop it for months on end.

First: congratulations! It's a huge accomplishment, especially the rewrite from scratch. That's what separates true writers, in my opinion. (I am not one of them.)

Second: Oh my god, please make a backup somewhere, just in case something happens to the SH database. Copy and paste it into a Google doc, a text file, whatever.

Save it to multiple devices. A hard drive, the cloud, google docs, a PDF, maybe even a USB thumb drive. The next step would be to hire an editor to work on the beginning of your story with you so that you can publish it and make some money for your hard work.

Now we wait for you to get 600k views since you deserve it. :blob_hmm_two: I will probably make another waiting room profile post. ?
I could probably tally up my viewcount. I know my average VC is almost 1.4k on RR. Here my novel only has 6.6k views.

EDIT: RR gives you total views as well. On RR, I'm at 127k. So I've got a total of 134k. Got a while to go before 600k.

Thank you! It's saved to G.Docs, so it's backed up on the cloud. But I will likely make a physical backup or two in the near future.

I'll definitely make multiple copies. I've got an 8tb drive back home that I'll copy everything to once I get back to my main PC. A thumbdrive I could use, too, but I lose those things in the blackhole that is my desk. I have like 10 of them scattered across my house, my parent's house, my work, my bags... Aite, it's probably more than 10.

I've actually considered hiring an editor and publishing the book, but when I started I made a personal promise and commitment that I'm doing my best to uphold: my story will always be free. Regardless of how popular it gets, I will forever post it up and leave it available everywhere I place it for people to read and enjoy. I don't have a patreon nor a place to be tipped, because I do this as a hobby and for the fun. Not for the monetary side of it. I know not every one is blessed with the ability to buy what they want or afford even the little things, and I would hate to put my story behind a paywall. Even if it means losing out on some money, I don't mind. Plus I also don't think my story is personally worth that hassle. I may have pride in my work but I know it's not a perfect work of art.

I can respect that honor but I think you are underselling your story. You can still leave it up for free on a bunch of sites while also having a physical copy for sale to anyone who wants to own a copy. I can't even count the number of times I have wished that I could own a physical copy of a webnovel or webcomic that I really liked and wanted to have despite it being free to me online. Fans and devoted readers will probably want something physical at some point. You don't have to cut readers off by making it pay to read only but having another paid option is okay.

I started writing as a hobby to take my mind off everything and I had no intentions of publishing it. Due to some family a friends remarks about my writing, I realized it would be best for me to publish it. I'll probably leave the webnovel up on SH because it's so different in quality from the published version but the story is pretty much the same so Amazon won't get on my ass for having it here for free. Maybe it will show you that your work is appreciated. I mean, you said you average 1.4k for each chapter on RR, which is pretty high up there.

You right. I could find a company to do it, but then there's the rigamarole of having to go live with it all that makes me hesitant. The editing process alone sounds like a mountain to climb. Add in the fact that I'm not informed on the processes of Indie publishing so if I were to go about it, I'd want to be sure that it could remain free at the end of the day. I'm not sure of how many places are willing to let that be a thing? Amazon, like you mentioned, isn't a fan of free versions being left around so I'm unlikely to post there unless the editing leads to a lot of changes.

I don't think 1.4k average is a lot, honestly. I see other novels in my weight class (page count, chapter count, rating range) with hundreds of thousands of readers. I'm pretty low on that spectrum, I'd say. But it's hard to tell, honestly. I'm not sure of where the median is and there's no real ranking structure up there. Nothing that's easy to understand or find where my book lays in the ocean of others aside from the rating rank itself. I know I saw someone mention before that 100 followers was a lot for a novel, but then you see others with thousands of followers so it's kind of hard to measure and trust.

Be careful making comparisons, especially on your first work -- a lot of authors benefit from having established fanbase from earlier works. Plus, for your story I wouldn't compare to the "big trendy genre" stories like Isekai or LitRPG, since it seems more like classic fantasy, and the "popular trends" on sites like SH and RR boost numbers. (As does smut, speaking from personal experience.)

One way to think about publishing through something like Amazon would be that it helps more people find your work. If you use Amazon KDP you can set your prices (as low as US$0.99 for digital) or even offer free promotional copies. And unless you publish on Kindle Vella (their serialized platform) you can republish something that's already been posted on SH/RR. Here, I'll quote their site:

Am I able to use KDP for content currently published elsewhere?

Yes, if you own the rights to your book you can publish using KDP if it has previously been published elsewhere.

But @Paul_Tromba can tell you much more about the work involved in editing and formatting for KDP.
