So basically I've been planning to write a fanfic but I'm confused which one should i write.

so if you guy's have something on your mind, tell me...

It would be better if it's an underrated anime , manga , or novel ....

time travel fic of the shrek series where prince charming goes back in time after he died in shrek the third (he made a deal with rumplestiltskin at the beginning of the movie where it's sort of a "life for a life ") so he hurries to fiona's tower just in time to accompany the original trio on their way to lord farquad to whisk her away for a title of nobility from the kingdom of far far away.
Prince Charming tries at first to seduce fiona but that doesn't work, then he plans to get sort-of adopted by the king so he's still in line for succession and by shenanigans fairy godmother and rumplestiltskin get hitched

So you either want to do something DRASTICALLY different, or crossover.

A lot of fanfics are generally worse versions of canon, so if you're doing a fanfic, make sure you deliver SOMETHING worthwhile.

One of my foundational fictions that got me writing, two of them, were Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and a defunct Spacebattles Quest roughly called Harry Potter: Wizard or Magus? (One of them is an attempt to make every character smart, and the other is a crazy HP/Nasu crossover).

But yes, it's VERY easy to screw up fanfiction, and if you have enough skill to write good fanfic, you have enough skill to write outright.

I've got a character who will eventually spread throughout the multiverse, and given one of the multiverse theory ideas where every fictional reality exists somewhere in the multiverse, said character could possibly interact with any other story. Thus meaning I could make an original work cross into fanfiction, which, while an idea I find to be a bit interesting, isn't something I intend to do. Anyway, guess I just used a semi-related topic to bring up an idea I've had stuck in my head. Maybe crossover fanfic?

I’ve been wanting “Lord of the Mysteries” fanfics lately, haven’t found many good ones.

Maybe make an original character as the protagonist (but good writing like “The Foreigner”)

or maybe a crossover LOTM x ORV

Well that's one good suggestion...

Hmm, after mulling over this question for a while, I'm going to recommend BLAME!

I think the setting is super compelling. It takes place in this inconceivably huge sprawling city that's absolutely hostile to humans. It brings to mind books like House of Leaves. Besides the setting though BLAME! is a bit of a blank canvas. The protagonist, Killy, is just barely a character to begin with, and there isn't much of a plot. But, that would give you room to craft an interesting story with your own characters, which is what I feel most fan fiction does poorly.

I think it's a little weird to write a fanfiction for a story you aren't a fan of.

Why do you want to write fanfiction? Are you hoping to become a better writer? Or is it something else?

If you are hoping to write a crossover or parallel universe or such a thing, I suggest watching the TV series Fringe. They covered a lot of tropes that are common in fanfiction. Watching a professional example may help you see the flaws or upsides in these tropes, or inspire you to write something differently.

As for examples of uncommon but lore rich anime, manga, and comics... I suppose I can suggest a few. I'll try to pick older shows that I don't see mentioned alot... But I don't really talk about anime alot so some of these might be too mainstream for you.
  • Blood series - (They have little in common with each other except that a vampire protects humans, so there's lots of room to be creative.)
  • Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions - (Very simple to use worldbuilding, cult classic fans.)
  • Knights & Magic - (If you wanted something a little more scifi, but still fantasy. Honestly, there's the possibility a fanfic could turn out better than the original.)
  • The Vision of Escaflowne - (Speaking of robots, there's this one. Reverse Harem, if you wanted that.)
  • Dances with the Dragons - (Pretty interesting world.)
  • To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts - (Interesting world, mythological references, plenty of room for creative changes to the plot.)
  • Rokka-Braves of the Six Flowers - (Actually one of the first anime I watched... Concept is interesting, plenty of room for improvement. Might look at Dangenronpa instead, but that's kinda popular.)
I think that's enough for now. I've forgotten so many anime that it's a little interesting to browse through crunchyroll looking for things I've seen before.
