This Monotone Puppet is looking for the peculiar, innovative tips that are rarely asked for. The ones you are nervous to share or the ones that are just freakin' funny! The stranger the better! Whether they are specific to a genre or not, what are some of the weirder things that you have done that you have found helpful with any aspect of writing?
For me, I have found that emulating (not going all the way, but at least modeling the action) the actions in graphic gore scenes that the main character is taking to be very helpful with psychological and horror. Biting flesh, using a knife, strangling oneself, poking yourself in the eye, etc. have all been useful in helping me put myself in my MC's shoes. You don't have to go very far with any action either. Just starting to do it can be enough to give you the words to describe graphic scenes and infuse them with action!
I have also found that certain poses help channel the insanity you might want for demented characters. Things like clutching your head, saying one word over and over; hugging yourself and shaking back and forth; frenetically scratching at your neck or arms; etc. Things like that.
So. What about you guys?
