To fic or not to fic? That is the question.

So I've had an idea for a while that once season one of my main series is finished I should try to get a couple other projects off of the ground.

One of these projects is a story with a character like Neito Monoma as the protagonist.

I wouldn't change anything about his personality or power as I think he's perfect for what I'm trying to do so one would come to the conclusion to do an MHA fanfic.

The problem I have with that is that I don't particularly like My Hero Academia. Neither it's world nor most of it's characters are that appealing to me. I also don't particularly like fanfics in general.

So what should I do and can you offer some advice as to how this could be written in a way that doesn't make it look like a ripoff?

I would say just start it off as a one-shot centered around the character! (I am recommending not doing a fan-fiction.)

If you mean how Neito Monoma looks and acts and not so much his 'quirk' from the series then might I suggest something school related? It seems cliché but at least you have some material to work with, his personality fits the "bully" archetype and works well in that kind of setting.

OR alternatively I think seeing a character like him interacting in a work place and not really being well-liked by his coworkers would be interesting, and maybe he ends up getting laid off his prestigious job and now has to work as a part-timer or something? This also would be a simple plotline that fits that established character.

IF you are talking about his character and ALSO the 'quirk' that he has, assuming you are not writing a super hero novel or a fan-fic of MHA, maybe you could have him be a character that wears a mask of personalities to cover up an embarrassing past, maybe he is a chronic liar on the surface but deep down he just wants to be truly appreciated and recognized. I can see a few avenues to be taken with that idea!

In the end I hope you come up with something you want to write. But I recommend challenging yourself and coming up with something unique.

Ask yourself why you like that character so much. Is it their character design? Power? Personality? Once you come up with an answer, try to dig deeper. For example: I love this character because he's badass. Why do I like badass character? Because it's satisfying to watch him triumph over the villain. Bla-bla-bla... Something like that.

Actually right now, I am writing a novel that is similar to your situation but rather than a character I find a power structure so good that I was gonna make a fanfiction of it.

However, I have decided that rather than making my choice limited to a single story based on something.

Why not just create one?

So right now, I have decided to start a one shot story with a full storyline.

For me, my advice is that you will create your own story like a one shot. It might have the same type of world building, timeline, or power structure. Just add your twist of originality that makes it stand off as your idea.

Example: since your character is Neito monoma. How about trying to add a flaw/backstory in him?

Like a "what if?"

Maybe something like, "What if the reason Monoma uses his ability to support other people because he once had a partner/friend that became distrustful of him because he outshined them?"

You can also change the world into something maybe a school type competetive system like classroom of the elite? Or perhaps a slice of life school type but with abilities? Or even a Sci-fi school fantasy itself?

There is no limitations on what you can do. So all I can say in summary is that, you use what you want and dispose of those that you do not want.

I suppose I should clarify.

Some IPs should not be fanfic'd. Some are open game.

1. Is your fanfic a love letter to the original, or is it wish fulfillment?

If A, then I consider all IPs open season, because you are trying to Make a story that honors the source.

If B, then do not use any IP that is currently alive.

What do I mean alive?

Any IP, with a single person at the helm of cannon is alive. Any IP currently in production by a company that is trying to maintain cannon is also alive.

MHA is an interesting setting, but it is alive. I have considered a story related to it, but because it is alive, I'll avoid it.

DC comics has been dead for years. Nothing in DC is cannon anymore. In fact, many of its characters are going to go public domain soon. I consider everything DC to be fanfiction at this point. I consider it open season on DC.

Rippaverse comics is awesome, but it has one visionary in charge of cannon. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole for that reason.

Fanfic does not mean a terrible story, it just has a bad rap. If you suck as a writer, adding in someone else's IP might get you eyeballs, but if your story sucks, it won't last.

I think your problem is, you don't know what the story is. The fantastical setting is a character in your story. What setting is best for the story.

MHA is great for crazy power scaling as things get out of control easy.

DC lends itself better to basic good VS evil conflict.

Marvel is much better at murky grey morality.

My setting of I Was Summoned is better at telling stories about superhero tropes and the "Realistic" consequences of a world where superhero powers are real.

There are legions of public domain superhero characters if you just looking for fodder.

Currently, Hotrod Lantern is a short story, by my standards, that explores the concept of the DC concept of the "emotional spectrum" because I got something to say about hatred and fear. Not normally big on fanfics myself, but I got something to say and I don't feel like filing off the serial numbers when I'm not trying to make money.

What are you trying to say?

Tell me that, and then I can help you.

Maybe the IWS setting could help you. It's basically broken up into three separate universes with Foreworld being the classic hero setting with DC vibes, Backworld being a darker version with Marvel vibes, and reverse world being the sleazy fanfiction version of the superhero genre, but with the horror of realistic consequences.

And there's naziworld, but they're just there to give the other worlds contrast.

So again, what are you trying to say?
