Battle Maps

I'm about to reach a part of my story where a short war will happen. Should I add maps with updates of the battlefield to the chapters?

My story has no illustrations up to this point, so I fear it may feel out of place.

If I should, what free app/site would you recommend to make the maps?

Inkarnate Is a good place to start and is easy to use. Try out the free basic account; it already has 3000+ assets to build your map with.

As to do it or not, if you enjoy doing it, why not? As long as it is fun.

Hm. I have trouble with directions when they're just written out, so maps really help me. On the other hand, it rarely makes a difference to my enjoyment of the story.

Do it if you enjoy it, don't do it if it feels like a chore that just wastes your time.

The old map effect is from Photoshop, using grunge textures on multiply blending mode.

Same goes with the arrows and other symbols for battles (crossed swords, parachute insignias, the wall running in the middle of the topmost map).

The rest, all are from Inkarnate.

Oh, was going to suggest dnd battle map makes. Not what you wanted

I did this map for later chapters, to help readers follow the action. Plus it also helped me think about the whole scene from a different perspective
